It seemed after a slow offseason like the San Francisco 49ers were gearing up to dispel any questions about Brock Purdy's contract extension and his future with the team. Former agent Joel Corry, now a writer for CBS Sports, isn't as optimistic a deal will get done early in the offseason.

49ers general manager John Lynch told reporters at the NFL's annual league meeting that it wouldn't be too optimistic to think the club could hammer out a deal with Purdy before they report for Phase One of the offseason program on April 22. That would help them avoid a potential holdout, and it would certainly make things easier heading into training camp where the team's last few big-money deals have gotten done.

Those past delays are a key reason Corry doesn't believe the 49ers and Purdy will have a deal done before the offseason program begins. Instead, he circled a date later in the offseason workout calendar.

Via CBS Sports:

A more realistic ambitious timetable for signing Purdy might be by May 27 when San Francisco begins phase three of offseason workouts. The 10 days of organized team activities can start being held where 11-on-11 drills are permitted. The 49ers shouldn't be surprised if Purdy is absent from offseason workouts as long as he doesn't have a new deal.

Corry went on to lay out some of the complicating factors beyond the simple question of "what is Purdy's value?"

He went back to the Jimmy Garoppolo contract in 2018, which made Garoppolo the highest-paid QB in the NFL at that point after starting only five games for San Francisco. He also discusses the logjam of QBs in the $55 million range and why Purdy has a strong argument to land in that group.

On the other hand, what's lingering over all of these negotiations, is the leverage of the franchise tag. The 49ers could let Purdy play out his deal and then franchise tag him in the next two seasons. That would cost them roughly $97 million while robbing Purdy of long-term security for at least three more years.

There's a real chance the contract talks reach an impasse with both sides knowing they hold some level of leverage. The 49ers have their future franchise tags. Purdy (presumably) has the franchise QB title and a strong case to make money that lands him at or near the top of the market given his resume compared to others making $55 million or more.

If Corry is correct and these contract talks turn into a prolonged negotiation that lasts into training camp, it could be setting up another long year for the 49ers where they have questions at the most important position on the field entering a training camp that may define the duration of the Kyle Shanahan-John Lynch tenure.
