Former Cardinals LB EJ Junior Has Been Where Miller is "I affected more than myself"

Loved EJ Junior growing up, dude was a beast. Nice article here via The Big Lead.

"In October of 1984, the St. Louis Cardinals went into Dallas and beat the Cowboys 31-20. E.J. Junior had a big interception as part of the victory. It should have been a joyous pinnacle moment in the NFL–Dallas had made the NFC Championship Game each of the previous four seasons, and had won 10 of 11 games against the Cardinals going back to 1978. For E.J. Junior, though, it was a pivotal moment beyond football.

“The biggest thing that changed me, because I felt I was only hurting myself, was when we beat the Dallas Cowboys, and a little kid came up to me and said, ‘I used to look up to you.’” Junior told me, “that woke me up, because I affected more than myself.”

I was there that day as Roy Green & those Cards torched the Boys...1984 should've been a special year if not for Neil Odonoghues miss in Washinton on the last play of the season.

I remember HC Jim Hanifan talking about treating EJ as a man after his drug use instead of beating him up with a baseball bat. Congrats #54 on turning your life around.

True, but OJ Anderson had around 12 to 13 receptions in that game for about a buck thirty. That loss was so painful at the time...

Only the Super Bowl ranks higher on the fan pain scale to me.

The play I will never forget was the Junior sack of Theesman on the next to last drive that was negated because of unnecessary roughness (BS) that led to the winning FG! That was ballgame

I wish I had that game on DVD or VCR...I did attend the 1st game in STL on my Bday that year in which (ironically) O'Donoghue made the FG to win 26-24 lol
Nobody really had an answer for Lomax to Green that year!!!

#81 toasted HOF Darrell Green in both games for like 179 & 195, plus about 6 TDs. Wow was he good before injuries starting creeping in? IMO Roy was as, or faster than Darrell.

That is the game that # 60 of the redskins grazed the ball off corse for the miss fedgoal. Butz is his name if I remember correctly.

Loved E.J. when I was a kid. Thought he and Niko were underrated. In a more general sense, I thought, even as a 10 or 11 year old, that the Big Red were underrated thanks to the rest of the NFC East. We had the Giants and Redskins, who were both powerhouses in the 80s, as well as the Eagles, who were always tough, and the Cowboys, who the old timers in St. Louis still hate, for the most part. They killed us over and over and that only made the occasional victory over them all the more sweet.

I am not familiar with E.J's struggles with drugs but I do know that Luis Sharpe was bad off on cocaine. Drugs in the 80s ravaged too many great athletes.

Poking around on the internet I have found a site or two that claim they have almost any game on DVD. Have not bought any yet but I have a short list of those that I want. I still remember that game and throwing popcorn at the t.v. when the game was over. O'Don still bothers me.

Wow! What a coincidence. EJ Junior came up in a Cards discussion at work today. A co-worker mentioned the proficiency of the Cards' screen play up the middle with Freddie Jones at TE. We started talking about the 88' roster after I brought up Freddie Joe Nunn.

There was some good talent on that team.
