Former Longhorns star Matthew Golden is drawing interest from his hometown team. Golden, who is projected to be one of the first wide receivers taken in the upcoming NFL Draft, met with the Houston Texans on Wednesday, according to Aaron Wilson from KPCR2 Houston.
During his only season as a Longhorn, Golden showcased his potential. He set career highs in receiving yards with 987 and touchdowns with nine. Regardless of who was under center, Golden was a reliable target. As the Longhorns fell to two wins short of a national title, the Houston native averaged 17 yards a catch.
If the Longhorns drafted Golden, he would join a talented wide receiver room. Currently, the Texans receiving corps is led by Nico Collins, one of the league's best wideouts. They acquired Christian Kirk in a trade with the Jacksonville Jaguars this offseason to improve their depth. Adding a player like Golden would make that unit faster and harder to stop.
Over the last few months, Golden has seen his stock skyrocket which he credits to his time with the Longhorns.
"That was my end goal, was to make it to the next level, " Golden said at the NFL Combine. "Just having the foundation that I had and the coaching staff that was here at the University of Texas, they put me in a position to go and follow my dreams. They changed my life tremendously.".Although Golden's statistics speak for themselves, he continued to impress at the NFL Combine. He finished with a 4.29 time in the 40-yard dash, best among wide receivers. It was also the second-fastest time at the combine. That performance has only increased interest in teams looking for help on offense.
Although Golden will be popular in the rumor mill over the next few weeks, his talent is undeniable. He should hear his name called early on in the draft and be an excellent addition to any NFL offense.
