He's back...in the AFC West. And he's hoping this time it's to stay. Jerry Tillery has signed with the Chiefs, marking his third AFC West team in the past four seasons.
The former first round pick (28 overall) by the Chargers never panned out in LA. After his third season, the Chargers declined his fifth-year option. Then midway through his fourth season, they decided even four years was too much, and waived him. The Raiders claimed him off waivers and even re-signed him for another season.
In 25 appearances with the Raiders, Tillery put up 41 tackles, two sacks, eight QB hits, and two tackles for loss. After the 2023 season, he was not brought back and signed with the Vikings. Despite starting 11 games -- his most since 2021 -- he put up just 28 tackles and with no sacks, three QB hits, and one tackle for loss and was not brought back by the Vikings.
Now Tillery returns to the AFC West. A late free agent signing who is probably just happy another team is taking a chance on him.
He seems like a player who needs extra motivation to step up. He had his best season in his third year when he was playing to get his fifth year option. Then when he came to the Raiders, his two best games were the ones against his former team. Perhaps the Chiefs are counting on that considering he would face his former teams four times next season.
