When it comes to the best overall players in UNC basketball history, Michael Jordan should be at the top of your list. When it comes to the best pure scorers to don a Tar Heels uniform, are there any other names that come to your mind?
For me, it's Coby White. Though White only played at North Carolina during its 2018-2019 season, he was undoubtedly one of the best players on that team, averaging 16.1 points per game and just behind Cameron Johnson.
Now in his sixth NBA season, all of which are with the Chicago Bulls, White is one of the league's young premier stars. White is averaging 20.3 points per game, which is 35th in the entire NBA and ahead of several stars, notably Domantas Sabonis and Julius Randle.
For his March performances alone, which cements his name in the star conversation, White was named the NBA's Eastern Conference Player of the Month.
White scored a minimum 21 points in every game for Chicago (33-42) during March, including a career-high 44 on Thursday, March 6 in a 125-123 victory over the Orlando Magic. White has the Bulls in the Eastern Conference's 10th and final seed for the NBA Postseason, which means a play-in game.
White entered Chicago with the plan he'd be learning behind Lonzo Ball, an oft-injured point guard who shows immense potential when healthy. With White's ascension into stardom and Ball's unlucky inability to stay healthy, the Bulls' starting point gig now belongs to the former Tar Heel.
Will White spend his whole career in the Windy City, or will he move teams like NBA stars seem to do every offseason? Regardless, White will contribute greatly wherever he plays.
