The Cardinals got some huge breaks in this game. A game ball certainly should go to TE Anthony Becht who was Johnny on the Spot on both of Wells' fumbles, the first saving a TD on the opening drive, the second saving a 37 yard fumble return.

Other huge breaks:

BMF's interference of Tori Holt that was not called, which would have given the jags a crucial first down. Pause your screen on the replay, BMF makes contact before the ball arrives.

Rolle's several punt return gaffes...and the team managing to maintain the lead in all of those scenarios. The irony was the one punt he should have let go was the one right before the half, which could have been the turning point of the game for the Jags if they score right before the half and take momentum into the locker room.

Campbell's HUGE FG block, and for the ball to come right to Antrel Rolle, who is the best player on the team to take it to the house in a jailbreak. He's uncanny in the open field.

Williamson's fumble...was a real momentum breaker in that first half.

The tipped pass that wound up in Q's hands.

The dropped TD pass in the end zone that hit the Jags' WR in the helmet after Rashad Johnson slipped on the play.

Games often turn on plays such as these, and the biggest one of all may have been Becht's fumble recovery right at the start.

There was some good fortune for the Cardinals there and the Cardinals did their part of creating it. They came to play and you could see it in their faces and their composure.

Far less penalties in key situations---this was HUGE.

But, most of all, I think that Ken Whisenhunt, in coordination with Kurt Warner and Matt Leinart called practically an impeccable game. He totally kept the Jaguars off balance. His run calls weren't forced or perfunctory. And how about some of the creative twists we saw in this game with EVERY skill player in Whiz's system making a contribution?

How about the Jason Wright TD call? How clever and unexpected was that?

The WR screens to Q and LSH. The quick fade to Q for a key conversion.

The timiing of the Breaston calls.

How about the 4th and 1 call? Power backfield with a TE motioning into the backfield as well...and he runs a quick flat-pass to Hightower.

How about the first down bootleg pass Whiz called for Leinart? Wide open.

What we saw today is that we may actually be better off with Whiz calling the plays because we NOW HAVE a running game and Whiz has a great sense of when to make those calls. And there is superb creativity and intelligence in the passing game. What the Cardinals have missed were the precision and timing of the routes and throws. Well, this week they got that back in sync. Credit Whiz, the coaches and the players.

As for the defense, what's most impressive is how physical and aggressive the Cardinals are playing. This not only shows in the unprecedented pressure they are generating up the middle, but in the consistently tough hitting this defense is laying on the opponents.

In past years there would have been a letdown by the defense after a close hard fought loss. There was NO letdown today. Yes, there were plenty of mistakes, like DRC's decision to go for the ball instead of just making the tackle on the TD to Sims-Walker. BUT, how about these 3 plays from DRC:

1. His TD saving tackle of Jones-Drew where he not only used the sideline as an added defender in textbook fashion but how hard he pasted him out of bounds. DRC made quite a an early statement there, IMO.

2. The shot-out-of the-cannon stop he made on on the key WR hitch pass to prevent a Jags' first down, where he blew through the block and made the tackle before Sims-Walker could even take a step.

3. The game ending interception where, once again, his speed and aggressiveness were eye opening.

The thing is about this defense under Bill Davis is, they are:

1. Smarter and better coached in the schemes.

2. Getting stronger contributions from their depth, as they did today from Branch, Watson and Rashad Johnson for example. Like Whiz on offense, Davis is getting everyone involved and contributing.

3. More consistently aggressive.

4. Much better tackles---much more physical, mopre fundamental and better finishing---save a few lapses today, like Highsmith's missed tackle on the Jags' first TD. Have you ever seen so many gang tackles as there were today? These players are feeling it.

5. Having far more fun playing it. You can see it in their faces. They are loving the game right now.

This was the type of win the coaches can relish because they can build the team's confidence with this win, but at the same time, use the tape as a real teaching tool, in order to keep the team improving and moving forward.

I'll tell you this...any player would love to play for the Whisenhunt's Cardinals, because they want EVERYONE to contribute. It's a true team effort and expectation. This is excatly why a Steve Breaston gets turned on and turned into one heckuva player.

Don't the combination of these 2 things make you want to pull your hair out?

Exactly...because if he had a sense of how to catch punts and just a little room, every play with him is a jailbreak! How about the fact that today he scored his SIXTH career TD! As a safety that's almost unheard of this side of Ed Reed.

Regarding the breaks, bounces, and calls today - I couldn't help but thinking that it was like I was seeing an "old Cardinals" game at SDS; except today the shoe was on the other team's foot! Even the "crowd" in the stadium looked like the old days in Tempe!

Good write up Mitch. I'm concerned about Wells fumbling. Was it just good defensive play by the Jags or was he carrying it too loosely or what? Is there anything fundamental the coaches need to address in the way he is carrying the ball maybe? Was he fumble prone in his OSU career?

Good thoughts Mitch. I sure hope we figure out a way to defend the middle of the field (especially with #44) next week.

Rookie mistakes! It can be easily fixed! His vision and quickness to hit the hole on the other hand can't be taught!

Nice update Mitch. That is a whole lot of breaks for the Cards. But sometimes you just make them happen. I'm also concerned about Well's fumbles. Two key ones, not good but Hightower picked up his game today which was needed.

Three safeties, Wilson, Johnson, and Rolle playing the nickle.

Then again, they could have Dansby shadow Clark (#44). More importantly the DL has got to get pressure on Manning!

Except it was a WET HEAT instead. Many a Jaguar needed an extra IV if you did'nt notice.I only saw our offensive line using the new equipment the Bidwills spent the big money on.The old broken down and brittle qb we got never hooked up to it.I could'nt have been more proud of a group bouncing back on the East coast like that. This was no gimme game at all.

If all of these balls don't bounce our way and that last dropped td was caught and Rolle does'nt take his back we have a tie game.I know we won't get into the IF game but last week was a big IF game and it hurt.

This team is gonna grow up bigger and better than last years issue. Its due to the coaching and how they adapt better than so many coaches I've ever seen.So far, except for the 3 man rush,I'm loving coach Davis' D.He uses everyone.Maybe he should'nt use Highsmith is all I'm asking.:D

I also really enjoy your posts Mitch and think you are spot on with thoughts of the game. Becht cetainly saved our tail today. The second fumble by Beanie I am not sure what else he could do. I could not believe the defender was able to get that clean of hit on the ball from behind.

I assume this is the last game we will see Rolle returning punts and Breaston will just have to resume the job.

the bounces did go the Cards way but, regardless, there was no doubt who the better team was. Every break would have had to go Jax's way for it even to be a game.

You make your own luck

As many have pointed out, the jags reminded me of the Cards of old.

Lack of fan support, a coach on the hot seat, players (rookie tackles, free agent wide receiver, coach/qb controversy), and of course bad breaks.

Chicken or the egg...

I'm glad you mentioned Becht in the first line. He deserves a lot of recognition for his effort (and an expensive dinner from Mr Wells).

Great road win but I sure wish the guys would play the same in the second half of games where they are way ahead as they did in the first half to earn that big lead.

Then they can coast home after the game.

Amen! Both defense and offense seemed to let up on the gas and coast home. I even thought Whis pulled the plug on Kurt one series too early.

I completely agree on the lucky calls. I was talking to another cards fan in the sports bar where I watched the game and we both commented that in years past those calls go against us. He even said, "so this is how it must feel to be a broncos fan."

I think the only miscue that was forgotten about that was another blessing was the Boldin fumble that just did roll out of bounds before a Jaguar got on top of it.

That was real lucky there.I hope we did'nt use up all of our luck for a year on one game.We sure did get a ton of breaks when they are all added up.

Although the Jaguars are built tough and with that heat & humidity on thier side it makes a team give everything they've got to win in Jacksonville.Thats why I think we are playing the toughest AFC division this year with the Texans,Colts and Titans left to play. The Titans and Texans beat the crap out of each other yesterday and the Texans won by 3.What a game.

We have a ton to clean up after this game,as much as we did after the 9er game before we Leave the BIG RED WAVE LEAVE THE BUILDING SCREAMING WITH JOY after next SUNDAY NIGHTS GAME with the colts.

No doubt Kurt Warner will need to have an awesome game and I think he wants to do so playing against Manning and to make up for the season opener with HIS fans.Lots of bad things got back to Kurt that really hurt him about how some fans wanted him gone now and for Matt to take over starting with the Jags. When Kurt is put under pressure,He plays his best.So I expect nothing but the best next week.Hope the play calling matches it.:D

That's what I was saying the whole game. Looks like the old days but it was the Jags doing it.

As poor as he played in the preseason and also in the opening game I really believed we may have seen the last of Kurt by week four. If we learned anything from the last two games it has to be one protect Kurt, two protect Kurt and three protect Kurt. This guy has more lives than a cat. 24 of 26 with zero turnovers are you kidding me, what a comeback. I also believe you're correct in your assessment that we got almost all the breaks that game. We can put to rest that the NFL officiating is out to kill our season. If the shoe was on the other foot that game we'd all be losing our minds right about now.
