LOWELL - The high school basketball season in Massachusetts is going out on a high note.

The Division 1 boys basketball state championship game closes the Commonwealth's winter hoops slate with a titanic matchup between No. 1 Franklin and No. 3 Newton North. Tip off is scheduled for 6 p.m. at the Tsongas Center in Lowell, the fourth game of the day.

The Panthers are making their second straight appearance in the state final. They fell 59-53 against unbeaten juggernaut Worcester North a season ago. This year's Franklin (25-1) team barely resembles that outfit. Six seniors graduated, and the 11 Class of 2025 players that fill the roster this season lacked experience when they began the year.

Except for guard Caden Sullivan. The Endicott commit had 23 points in last year's final and has been on a tear every since. He set Franklin's single-season scoring record this year and notched his 1,000th point in the process. He has 18 20-point games and has never been held to single digits.

This is Franklin's fourth trip to the state championship game since 2014 (2014, 2018 and 2024). The Panthers are 0-3 searching for their first state title.

The Tigers won't be easily tamed, either. Newton North (24-1) is undefeated against in-state competition this season. Its only loss came Jan. 16 against Albany (Calif.) in the HoopHall Classic. The Tigers have won 17 games in a row since.

Senior guard Teagan Swint is a major reason. The Johns Hopkins-bound sharpshooter was a McDonalds All-American nominee and the Bay State Carey MVP.

Newton North last played in the state final in 2022 against BC High, falling to the undefeated Eagles. The Tigers captured back-to-back championships in 2005 and 2006.
