Redskins | Smoot on the Trading Block - from KFFL (http://nfl.kffl.com)
April 18, 2003 16:39:22 PT According to ESPN.com’s Len Pasquarelli, the Washington Redskins have quietly put CB Fred Smoot back on the trading block. The team, as reported, is looking to acquire additional draft choices. There’s a chance the team could part ways with him for a high second-round draft choice.

With Smoot on the block, and us with a high 2nd round pick, what would you think about this? Rather than taking a guy who is an unknown quantity in the league, we would pick up a superb number two guy, and not give up much in the process. Plus, his cap number is rather low, and he would bump Barrett and Hill down on the depth chart, giving us some great depth at corner.

Would I draft Smoot with our #37? Oh yeah! Smoot and Starks with Wilson and Jackson would be a potentially formidable secondary. I'd still be tempted to draft Leftwich at #6 and Calico in the 3rd. Any DL concerns would then need to be addressed after June 1. If worst comes to worst, we have Johnson-Davis-Bryant-KVB for another year and we draft a DT high next year. Sign Robinson and Muhammed and we'd be set at 20 out of 22 starting positions. Maybe draft a DT early next draft and sign a DE, but we'd be close as hell....

Smoot isn't THAT good. If we want a corner on the first day, we should either draft one in round one (Newman if available or Trufant) or we should draft one in round three.

Smoot is a little bit of a head case, and is not a marquee player.

I'd do it in a heartbeat. As was stated earlier, I'd rather have a know quanity (even if it is average NFL starter), than a crapshoot. Smoot may not be the second coming of Deon Sanders, but he is a solid starter--which is a notch above David Barrett, who IMO is a good nickleback.

I would do the following (subject to change on an hourly basis):

1. round 1 - robertson
2. round 2 - trade for smoot.
3. round 3 - peek.

draft a punt returner/receiver in rounds 4 and 5. sign robinson and pick up another veteran receiver after june one (muhammed?). receiver wise - if we do this some of the current guys, or a veteran or the 5th or 6th round guy will get cut..but so be it..

In my opinion..in the above scenario - our defense got quite a bit better. Put peek and dennis johnson in on passing downs...big weakness is a full time dend opposite kvb...so...try to sign the best available guy after june 1st cuts and see who is out there..

then get contract extension going with shelton, kvb, barrett (nickel back), etc.....

My 2nd preferred scenario would be to draft suggs instead of robertson..and go for the best dtackle on the board in round 3 instead of peek..I could go either way..

I wouldnt give up a high #2 for Smoot.

However how bout this for an idea?

Trade Thomas Jones and our #2 (37 overall) to KC for thier #2 (47 overall) and thier #5 (150th overall)

Then Trade the #2 (47th overall) to Washington for Smoot.

So we would give up a 2nd round pick and Thomas Jones for Smoot and a 5th rounder.

Basically what this would do is increase the value of Thomas Jones to a 5th round pick and still get us Smoot.

Whatcha all think?

That sounds better, but I still think that we would need more value. Washington imo, would have to throw in another pick.

I would trade our #2 for Smoot. He already has a couple of years in and he would be our #2 CB. It just makes sense to make this trade, it shores up our secondary and we can concentrate on defensive linemen with our first and third picks. Smoot has the speed and he is 5'-11" tall so he can match up well with the taller receivers. I think everybody should e-mail Graves and tell him to do the trade.

Getting Smoot on our team would make us better but, I think that what we would have is two really great #2 corners. Starks isn't the shutdown corner that we need. Unless we worked this deal like Jason (thus holding on to draft picks) suggested our best bet is to hold on to as many picks as we can and hope that we can find a diamond in the rough if we don't draft a CB (Newman, Trufant, Wolfolk, etc.) early.

NO, NO, NO....to toot toot Smoot. No way this team needs that loser. Why do you think he is on the trading block?
He does resemble Dion Sanders in one major area.....he runs the other way to avoid any physical contact and couldn't tackle Richard Simmons.
This is not the type of player to fit into this team. I think its pretty safe to say no one in the Cards organization will give this much serious thought at all.
