Don't forget that the main reason the Cards didn't have a 1000 yard rusher for several years was that they were splitting carries between two or more RB's.

2006 Edge 337 carries for 1159
2005 JJ/Shipp 269 for 821
2004 Smith/Hambrick 330 for 1220
2003 Shipp/Smith 318 for 1086
2002 Shipp/Jones 326 for 1345

Edge is also the first Cardinal RB with over 300 carries in one season since Ottis Anderson in 1981. Tomlinson by contrast has gone over 300 every year he's been in the NFL.
That's a good point DJ. One thing that I would like to point out is that it might suggest that Edge could carry more of the load and was more versatile than the backs that we had.

The reality of free agency this year is that almost everyone is under the cap and has quite a bit of money to spend. Additionally its a poor quality year in terms of talent. Teams will be overspending that is for sure.

IMO here is what the Cards should do:

1. If we can't resign L. Davis to a long term contract then we should franchise him. He is one of the more highly rated OTs in free agency and we have the money. Let the new coach decide if he is better at guard or tackle but we have no reasonable replacement. Better to Franchise him and keep than to be $10 million under the cap.
2. Target some solid players but perhaps not the first tier that everybody will be bidding on and overpaying. An exmple would be if we feel we need a TE don't go after Tony Gonzales but perhaps Daniel Graham of the Pats or Eric Johnson of the 49ers. In other words get 3 or 4 solid starters but let the other teams overspend for the top players. Denny wanted "4 or 5 pieces of the pie" instead of putting all the money for one. Although I'm glad we signed Edgerrin James, Denny wasn't wrong on this.

3. Build through the draft. Once again we are picking 5th or 6th in every round. We got to get BPA and not blow the draft.

Look what happened to MLB in FA this year. Shortage of talent and especially pitching. Pitchers with 4.2 ERA's and .500 records are getting long term 17 mil dollar a year deals. Decent position players are getting 7-8 year deals at $126 mil plus. I do not know if the Bidwill's can adjust to big bump in salaries in time to help us get a better FA. I would not be surprised to watch us sit on the sideline while Rome burns and Mr. B fiddles.

For 2006 it would be 368 for 1219 and 10 TDs rushing between Edge/Shipp/JJ. Take JJ out and it's 354 for 1200 and 10 TDs.

I only counted the second back as they usually had a larger # of carries. Hambrick had 63, Smith had 90 in '03. JJ and Shipp only had 33 between them in 2006 but they both had over 100 in 2005. TJones had over 100 carries every year as the Cards #2.

New England was similar this year. They didn't have a 1000 yard rusher but Dillon and Maroney combined for over 1500.

The overall rushing totals go up every year if you add in all the Damien Andersons and Josh Scobeys and Mackovica's 1 carry for 30 yards.

That's why I took out JJ's 19 yards or whatever it was. But Shipp's 4 TDs should def count (as Edge got us down there for them).

Good to see the Cards get some rushing touchdowns. Especially after Tomlinson had more rushing TD's this year than the Cards have from their RB's in the last 4 seasons combined.

Do you base that on him improving as the season wore on (YPC first month 3.4, second 2.4, then 4.4 and 4.2 the next two months), or by him becoming the first 1100 yard rusher for the Cardinals in somewhere on this side of forever? Just curious.

I base it on the eyeball test. He looks slow, misses holes, and doesn't even block well any more.

If that's not good enough for you, go right on feeling superior in football analysis. I don't mind. The sarcasm works too. I feel properly chastised. From now on, in deference to your superior method of relying on stats alone, I'll refrain from all non-quantifiable judgments. Far be it for me not to learn from the very best.

Well as long as you have that straight. :p

Seriously though, proclamations of him being "done" and wasn't a good FA acquistion are asking for rebuttal. I will give you that he hasn't lived up to the blocking role he used to have and missed more than his fair share this year, but when the line got stable, he was well over 4 YPC and played very well late in the year. That was my eyeball test as well.

BTW, nice sarcasm counter by using sarcasm...now you are speaking my language. :D

Hey D-Dogg, we're cool. I did overstate Edge's decline anyway and everybody on this board knows it.

I am, however, truly concerned about Leinart's propensity to get dinged.

Vinny, Matt really didn't get hit all that much.

However, when he did get hit he often didn't see it coming...that I didn't like. That bears hit, for example, that almost gave him whiplash.

If his shoulders keep getting hurt, yes I don't like that. Perhaps he could get some kind of special padding under his shoulder pads for further protection.
