According to KGW8, a TV station in Portland, the Warriors and Blazers have agreed to swap Nick Van Exel for Dale Davis and an unnamed player to make the deal work salary wise.

If this deal does indeed go through, the biggest loser would be Erick Dampier, who was rumoured (by Peter Vescey)to be involved in a sign and trade deal that would send him (and his brand new 6 year, 71 million dollar contract) to New York for Nazr Mohammed and Othella Harrington. With Dale Davis on board, bringing in two more backup big men makes little sense for Golden State.

This would suggest the Warriors have decided to deal Dampier to Memphis. The reason the deal kept stalling was that the Warriors wanted Swift and the Grizzlies did not want to give him up. Without Swift, the Warriors were going to be terribly small (even Foyle is only 6'10"). But with Davis, the Warriors could take some wing guys like Posey or Wells. At least one of those guys is expendible after Memphis picked up Cardinal.

Do you want Marion for 11mil or Posey and Wells/Q for less?

What does Portland want with both Van Exel and Stoudamire?

NVE played a fair amount of SG with Dallas and is a very good outside shooter.

In any case, I would guess there are draft picks involved.

Yes, and look at how well it worked in Dallas. Van Exel was traded at the first opportunity and Nash became so alienated he bolted the team.

Although Stoudamire played quite well at the end of the season it's clear that he is not their future PG. Of course Van Exel is not either.
But he may be more effective as their starting PG and next offseason they can decide which one should they re-sign. If neither of them is worth a new contract they still didn't lose anything since Davis is not the part of their future either.

All they did was was tie for the best record that season. Getting Jamison made a lot of sense in that it permitted them to move Finley back to the SG, but things got weird when they dealt for Walker. In any case, I think the Mavs traded FOR Jamison rather than dumping NVE.

The real question is why the Warriors did that deal. However, I'm not sure that question could be limited to NVE. The Warriors seem to be the Celtics of the West, making all kinds of weird deals that don't work.

It really says something about Dale Davis, doesn't it? ;)

IMO the ideal trade would be DDavis and Ruben Patterson for NVE and Evan Eschmeyer. Portland dumps Patterson, who's another bad character and is keeping youngsters from breaking in to the rotation, and they get extra cap room next season; Golden State gets to dump Eschmeyer and pick up someone who can actually play.

I'm pretty sure it won't happen that way, though. :p

ESPN.com
The Golden State Warriors traded Nick Van Exel to the Portland Trail Blazers on Tuesday for veteran center Dale Davis and backup guard Dan Dickau, a league source told ESPN Insider Chad Ford.

The Oregonian reported Tuesday that Dickau told the newspaper he had been traded. Blazers general manager John Nash would not comment when reached by the paper.

The trade is essentially a salary swap by both teams; Van Exel and Davis are in the last year of their deals.

The Warriors no longer needed Van Exel now that they've signed guard Derek Fisher. However, they did need another veteran center to back up Adonal Foyle with free agent Erick Dampier likely leaving the team through free agency. Dampier is expected to agree to a sign-and-trade deal with the Knicks this week.

The deal doesn't make as much sense for the Blazers. They have Damon Stoudamire at the point along with lottery pick Sebastian Telfair. Telfair's played so-so in the Rocky Mountain ***** summer league and may have prompted the Blazers to look for more immediate depth at the position. While the deal shores up their back court, it hampers their front court to a certain extent. Theo Ratliff is the starter, but he has a history of injuries. His only real back-up now is Vladimir Stepania. Van Exel has a $12.7 million team option on his contract next season. It's unlikely that the Blazers will pick up the team option.
