Wow...this is a bold statement against the Cards defense...

"The Cardinals might have the NFL's worst collection of defensive linemen and linebackers. They struggle against the run and are equally inept in coverage and in rushing the passer. The Lions should spread the field to force defenders out of the box and then run the ball inside against six- or seven-man fronts. James Stewart's separated shoulder on Aug. 28 would hamper this plan, but the Cardinals front is so weak that it might not matter. Backups Shawn Bryson, Avon Cobourne and Autry Denson still should be able to take advantage of this plan. If the Lions can force Arizona to commit more defenders to coverage, this becomes a huge advantage for the Lions."

I hope Ray Thompson and Calvin Pace read this...

Aww Hell...here's the whole thing...

Why To Watch

Future Hall of Fame running back Emmitt Smith plays his first NFL game without the Cowboys' star on his helmet. . . . Former 49ers coach Steve Mariucci makes his debut with the Lions. . . . Can Lions rookie wide receiver Charles Rogers live up to the hype and be the go-to guy for quarterback Joey Harrington? . . . The Cardinals beat the Lions 23-20 in overtime in 2002 and won 45-38 in '01. Even though these aren't the best of times for these two downtrodden teams, at least they put on some pretty entertaining games.

Cardinals Keys For Success

1. Slow down the game. With wide receivers David Boston and MarTay Jenkins departing in the offseason, the Cardinals have no experience outside. The strength of the team is its big offensive line. Signing Smith and fullback James Hodgins helps, and Marcel Shipp provides depth at running back. With the Cardinals unable to stretch defenses, they will face a lot of eight-man fronts. Considering the team's lack of big-play ability, Smith and Shipp must control the ball and keep Detroit's young offensive guns off the field.

2. Use some spread formations. Considering the Cardinals' current situation at wide receiver, it's tough to imagine Detroit not sticking eight men in the box on just about every play. Arizona should counter the Lions' plan by using creative formations. If Detroit fails to respect Arizona's three- or four-receiver sets and continue to stack seven and eight men near the line, quarterback Jeff Blake -- one the league's best downfield passers -- will get an opportunity to throw deep.

3. Blitz and play man-to-man outside. The Cardinals' defense must take some chances and blitz Harrington to force him into making bad decisions. Harrington occasionally forces passes into coverage and makes most of his mistakes under pressure.

Lions Keys For Success

1. Spread the field and run between the tackles. The Cardinals might have the NFL's worst collection of defensive linemen and linebackers. If the Lions can force Arizona to commit more defenders to coverage, this becomes a huge advantage for the Lions.

2. Make the Cardinals drive the length of the field. The Lions face a struggling offense and should adopt a conservative defensive plan. It's difficult to picture Arizona even getting into the red zone, let alone the end zone. If the Lions bend (field goals) but don't break (touchdowns), then Arizona can't score enough to win.

3. Return specialist Eddie Drummond must provide a spark. With Desmond Howard gone, Drummond will return kicks and punts for the Lions. Drummond has been terrific on kick returns but inconsistent on punts. He has big-play potential and averaged 26 yards per return last season.

Injury Update

Cardinals

QB Jeff Blake: Concussion (8/28).
Blake left Thursday's final preseason game because of a concussion. Blake suffered the injury on the first play from scrimmage.

DE Kyle Vanden Bosch: Knee surgery (8/27).
The Arizona Republic reports Vanden Bosch has been placed on injured reserve, meaning he will miss the entire season. Dennis Johnson will take over for him.

CB Duane Starks: Knee (8/27).
The Cardinals placed Starks on injured reserve on Tuesday, according to the Arizona Republic. That move ends his season. Renaldo Hill, a seventh-round pick in 2001, will take his spot.

Lions

RB James Stewart: Shoulder (right) (8/28).
Stewart separated his right shoulder in the first quarter of Thursday night's preseason game against the Buffalo Bills. It was not determined how long he will be out.

CB Christopher Cash: Knee (8/25).
Detroit placed Cash on injured reserve on Monday. He will miss the entire season with a knee injury.

LB James Davis: Ribs (8/24).
Davis injured his ribs and had to be carted off the field in the third quarter. Davis was to be examined after the game. "Any time you see a stretcher and a backboard come out, you think maybe it is the neck or spine, but it was his ribs," Mariucci said. "He could not move and he was in a pretty good amount of pain."

CB Dre' Bly: Ankle (sprain) (8/21).
Now the Lions have announced that Bly will miss Saturday's preseason game against the Cleveland Browns because of a sprained ankle.

DT Luther Elliss: Chest muscle tear (7/17).
Elliss, trying to return after two subpar years with elbow injuries, suffered a significant setback when he tore a chest muscle while lifting weights in the offseason. Elliss, who will not require surgery, could miss the entire presesaon schedule.

The Bottom Line

The acquisition of Smith and Super Bowl MVP Dexter Jackson excited the Cardinals' fans, but the moves won't be enough to offset the loss of wide receiver David Boston and quarterback Jake Plummer.

The Cardinals were bad last year and appear to have gotten worse through free agency and the draft.

Without a legitimate threat at receiver to worry about, the Detroit defense will focus all of its attention on stopping Smith. In addition, the Cardinals will struggle to stop the Lions' running and passing games.

Arizona simply lacks the talent to be competitive with a team that finished 3-13 last season.

Pick: Lions 21, Cardinals 13

Arizona simply lacks the talent to be competitive with a team that finished 3-13 last season.

And I Payed for this SH!@#@!@

I was going to post about the linebackers..and then read skorps post and could not help myself...I do not know if the dlineman we have are the worst collection in the league as the author suggests...but I do know fisher and thompson are studs and the statement that our linebackers are horrible is incorrect if these 2 are playing.. darling is also a very good player..not sure about ronnie mac - he had some flashes in the preaseason and I hope he can regain his old form of making plays.

If that wasn't bad...look what they say about our O...

"The Cardinals' offense will struggle to maintain drives because Detroit will stack the line with eight men. The anemic Arizona offense will be dependent on the defense to force turnovers and the special teams to win the battle of field position. It probably is the team's only chance to score.

This could be painful to watch "

Good lord...you figure we would have generated some enthusiasm with our preseason....

If these writers actually knew what they were talking about they would be breaking the books in Vegas. They must not be doing so well as they are still poor media hacks spilling out drivel. Plummer and Boston could not get us to .500. Why will we miss them? The Pats benched their best WR and won a Superbowl. We picked up James Hodgins. This is a guy who can not be over looked, but the writer did. The addition of Jackson, Pace and better play of Bell and Bryant will make a HUGE difference. The writer seems to be neglecting our o-line, which plays pretty good with only 3 starters and will dominate when all 5 are together. Blake played on very bad teams. Plummer played on very bad teams. Blake has a better TD/INT ratio than John Elway. Plummer has a better TD/INT ratio than Ryan Leaf. Blake and Plummer both played on bad teams, but Blake produced. Plummer failed. Again, why will we miss him? Lets talk about leadership. Blake, Smith, Jackson and Hodgins bring a ton of it. Who are the veteran leaders on the Lions?

In fairness to the writer they did credit our O-line and Hodgins...they anticipate Detroit concentrating soley on shutting down our run by stacking the box with 8 guys...they give no respect to our young albeit unproven recievers and thus think we will not be able to score..they also think that we have the worst D-Line and LB core in the league by far...they think that even without James Stewart the Lions will be able to run on us all day long...I just really wish the Cards go out and make a statement with this game..noone in the Nat'l media gives the Cards a shred of credit for the preseason..it's like it never happened....Please Coach Mac...put this write-up in the locker room..let the Cards read this...if this doesn't motivate them nothing will.....

Jtssaz - I also have a subscription with these guys. Their draft analysis seems fairly good. But, it's obvious they have not watched the Cards in preseason! Hopefully, their week to week commentaries will have better objective conclusiuons based on actual observation of season games televised. JMO.

I liked the way they stated the KVB and Starks were out, "according to The Arizona Republic", almost as if they aren't sure, but thats what they heard. That shows how much they pay attention to the Cardinals. I hope we kick the crap out of the lions.

What do we expect, bunch of crap from somebody who is basing his evaluations on last years players. Where most of these guys fail IMO is they don't figure for improvement unless you add guys that have played in the league for 10 years. Sure we may have more unknowns then most teams that doesn't mean we aren't better.

You know what upsets me? These sports writers have the best jobs in the world and they obviously can't take the time to watch one Cardinal pre-season game to make a fair assessment before they start to write their thoughts. These guys are going by last year's team, and obviously haven't seen what we are doing this year. Damn, I have a degree in English, give me a pen and I'll write for The Sporting News!!!!

LMAO! Terry Tate rules! And what color does he wear? Cardinal red. Nuff said.

Hey guys, the writers have to justify their Cards as the worst team in the league somehow. I'm not surprised by this at all. They haven't followed us at all and are just making blind calls on hear say and past performance.

Week 8 and we're sitting at 5-3 or better. Their tone will change.
4-4 or worse and this BS will be their staple diet.

It's all good. For now. Lets Tate some people on the field and make them take notice.

the national media (or at least beat writers in places like miami and san jose) - seem to think we have a 2 - 4 win team here..

Interesting to note that the local media - or the arizona republic anyway - thinks a little higher of the team...dan bickley said 8 - 8 I think..although it was a little disappointing that the guy closest to the team said 6 - 10 (somers)..of course maybe he does not want to get laughed at by his media colleagues (he does the sporting news cardinals stuff)...bolvin, etc pretty much said 7 - 9.

Well . . .

I guess we'll find out on Sunday if the team has REALLY improved as much as we hope they have by kickin' some Lion butt (by 7 or more points).

If not, it may very well be a long season.

In addition to having our guys read it, it's even more important that we get the Lions players to read it. They couldn't help but become overconfident!

It's all proved on the field. One way or another. And if their life depended upon the accuracy of their predictions, there wouldn't be a single sports reporter alive.

Ronnie Mac has had his best preseason in years. He has played at a high level in practice and games and I think that it is a direct result of the competition he has received from James Darling. McKinnon continues to be my favorite player.

It is amazing what competition does. We are absolutely loaded at linebacker. Let's just stay healthy!

Chainthroer - I have their draft guide and it is horrible. Just review the actual draft with their predictions. The number of mistakes is amazing. I'm talking Rein Long as the 5th ranked player in the draft by TSN, when was he drafted, the 4th rd. Lots of examples like this.

I have in the past bought many of these rags. I have not bought any in three years. These are opinions by the least informed people in sports. To read them and believe them are two very different things. It's bad enough that we Cardinal fans have to put up withour team year after year but to read this stuff before we even get going is bull. EVen in 1998 they said we were horrid and would finish out of everything, we went to the second round. I think we are better than that team was with the unknown exception WR.

If we stay healthy and that my friends is how champions are made we have as good a chance on any Sunday as the team we play. How that ends up nobody knows especially the writers from these weekly, monthly, rags.
