FROSTBURG — Frostburg State’s pitching and defense did everything it could in Friday’s doubleheader, splitting a pair of games with Davis & Elkins.
The Senators (6-17, 1-1 Mountain East Conference) won the first game 2-1 while the Bobcats (5-13, 1-1 MEC) took the rematch 1-0.
“Obviously, we didn’t hit the ball very well,” Frostburg head coach Bill Vasko said. “But we got two tremendous efforts on the mound. Game one, our senior Kate Chapple came out after being hurt a little bit earlier in the year. Did a terrific job after giving up those first two runs.”
In the first game, all three runs were scored in the first inning.
Lina Gutierr led off for Davis & Elkins with a double to left, then Linzey Allar hit a no doubt two-run blast to dead center.
Hanna Binek drew a walk before Arden Miller hit a line drive to center for a base hit.
With two runners on, Olivia Stetler sent the first pitch she saw into right for an RBI single to cut Frostburg’s deficit to 2-1.
The story of the rest of the game was the Bobcats inability to capitalize with runners on.
“Their pitchers made a good adjustment, they kept hammering us on the outside corner,” Vasko said. “We didn’t make any sort of adjustment on that pitch. They could go up late on us when they were ahead in the count.”
Frostburg had the bases loaded in the first and second innings, but failed to score either time.
The Bobcats left nine runners on base, and didn’t have more than one on base the rest of the game.
“Offense has been our strength so far,” Vasko said. “Our pitching and defense has struggled a little bit. Obvious disappointment when both in the first and second inning we had bases loaded and didn’t really capitalize. I thought we hit the ball really well, especially that first inning.”
After allowing the home run in the first, Chapple responded with six shutout innings as Frostburg’s starter.
She threw a complete game, allowing two runs on five hits and two walks.
“That’s a tremendous job on her part,” Vasko said. “She’s been battling some arm injuries throughout the beginning part of the year. This was her first time back in a couple of weeks. To be able to go out and pitch a full game and give us an opportunity to win, I’m really proud of her.”
Miller was responsible for three of the Bobcats’ six hits.
Saylor Kneeland got the win, tossing seven innings of one-run ball with six hits, four walks and five strikeouts for the Senators.
The second game was a pitcher’s duel between Frostburg’s Izabella Donaldson and Davis & Elkins’ Sammie Jarvis.
Both pitchers went the distance, but Donaldson got the win after allowing five hits with no walks and nine strikeouts.
It was the freshman’s first collegiate shutout in her seventh start.
“She didn’t pitch really well in our midweek against Shippensburg,” Vasko said. “Just wanted to see a little more out of her. I thought she came out really strong, struck out the side in the first inning. And then just kept pressure on. She worked ahead, that’s where she struggled this year was working ahead of batters. I thought she did a really great job getting ahead and finishing it off.”
Jarvis allowed two hits and three walks also with nine punchouts.
The only run came in the sixth inning off the bat of Miller when she sent a fly ball into right center that found the gap for a double.
After a fielding error by right fielder Madison Smith, Miller took off and rounded the bases to put Frostburg in front.
Donaldson retired the side in order in the top of the seventh for the victory.
Miller and Allegany graduate Samara Funk were the only Bobcats with hits in the second game.
After a 29-20 campaign last spring, Frostburg entered Friday with a 4-12 start to this season.
The Bobcats scored at least 10 runs in five of its first 18 games and at least five runs in 10 games.
The issue through the first three weeks has been pitching, as Frostburg has allowed five or more runs in 14 of the 18 games so far.
Eight games resulted in 10 or more runs for the other team.
“We’ve hit the ball really well and we’ve scored so many runs,” Vasko said. “On the mound, we’ve given up a lot of walks and those walks end up scoring or we’re not playing great defense behind our pitchers. Like you saw today, the pitching and defense were tremendous. Now we need to make sure we have all three phases of the game playing well at the same time.”
The Bobcats host West Virginia Wesleyan (4-16, 0-0 MEC) for a doubleheader on Sunday starting at 1 p.m.
