Since we're stuck in the summer TV duldrums where the only thing to watch is either reruns or the newest reality show, I figured I'd introduce one of my favorite shows to all of you. Yes, the show is anime but I'm willing to bet that for most people that watch it might become one of their favorites regardless of genre (anime has become pretty badly stereotyped over the years ... hey I'm an anime geek what did you expect)

The show (the reruns anyways) airs on the Adult Swim block on Cartoon Network every Monday through Wednesday night at 1 am. Since stayingup and watching is not much of an option that leaves 3 options for watching it.

1) Use your TIVO, any other DVR., or program your VCR. Thats what they're there for
2) Buy the DVDs. DVDs of anime shows are avialable at places sucha s Best Buy but they are expensive (4 episodes on each DVD and they're sold for $20 a pop)
3) Download them. Almost all file sharing programs will have this show available somewhere but be warned be careful of what language its available in (unless you like subtitles). Also it should not feature episodes above 26 (there are 51 total for the series but only 26 have been dubbed thus far ... new episodes are scheduled to be shown

Synopsis
Imagine a world in which Alchemy is not only possible, but used frequently. Alchemy, though, is a science, and with all sciences there are laws that must be followed. Welcome to the anime, Full Metal Alchemist. The story begins about two brothers, Alphonse (left) and Edward (right) Elric. Ever since they were young they had practiced the science of alchemy. You follow their journey of being alchemists and their quest to regain that which they have lost.

Their father was a well recognized alchemist, which is probably where their knack for it comes from. However, when they were young their father left, and they remained in the care of their mother. One day their mother died, and in their innocence and ignorance, they attempted what was forbidden, human alchemy.

What happened next, they were obviously not prepared for, and in the aftermath the brothers lost more than just their mother. In the freak accident Alphonse loses his body, and in a moment of panic Edward ties his brother's soul to a piece of armor. Edward himself loses an arm and a leg, a costly reminder of what has happend.

The story begins and details the brother's journey to find a alchemy amplifier so that they may return to their normal bodies.

Here's a picture of what the characters look like 3 years after the incident (where the majority of the storyline takes place)

Just to get into a few further details without giving too much away. The science of alchemy is based on breaking down of components and then reshaping them (ie as you see in the pic above Ed uses alchemy to change his metallic right arm into a sword ... in the show they'll explain it in better detail but I just wanted to give an example).

Plenty of action (and pretty brutally violent action at that), comedy, and even some downright heartbreaking moments that will rip your heart out.

In short, a show I highly recommend to anyone. However in saying that I do warn that this show can be extremely violent and the content might be a bit much for the real young kids so I'd suggest not watching it with them. This show is intended more for teenage level (or near that) and above.

Just another brief note - Unfortunately due to being so busy I wasn't able to put this thread up before the season reran so you missed the first two episdoes. Its no big deal since very little storyline wise goes on in those episodes, the episode tonight gives the background story of the two boys and how they came to join the military.

Anyways enjoy the show

I don't know how many of you have been watching this show (I'm guessing very few of you if any at all) but once again I strongly recommend this show to just about anyone (young children should not be watching this and if you watch tonight's episode you will understand why).

The episode tonight is one of the best in the series and what really got me addicted to this show. Its where they first introduce the character Scar (that dude in my sig) and to be quite frank he makes one hell of a first impression. Since quite of you liked my sig, I figured I'd let people know when his character debuts.

This show gets really intense and complicated in a hurry and will be difficult to keep everyone up on track as to what happened. Lets put it this way its a combination of action, a conspiracy of X-Files stature w/o aliens (for XPhilers think season 1 through 5 of X-Files before Chris Carter lost his mind), and a storytelling aspect similar to Lost (lots of flashbacks) and even a pseudo magic aspect of Harry Potter ... all set in 1913

I'm just giving you a heads up and emphasizing how good of a show this is. I just suggest that you guys watch and trust me you won't regret it.

For those that want to watch its shown on Cartoon Network @ 1 and 4 am Monday through Wednesday night. For those who want to download this specific episode its called "Episode 7 - Night of the Chimera's Cry".

Enjoy

I finished watching this a few days ago. Most enjoyable TV show I've seen in quite a while. I'm going to see the movie tonight.

She's at the border at the age i'd suggest. Its a matter if she can handle the subject of death.

There are quite a few characters that die in it.

Depends on your definition of appropriate. I was watching R rated movies when I was that age.

There's no adult content or foul language. A good portion of it is lighthearted. Occasionally the fantasy violence can get a little graphic (pg-13). The plot is a million times more interesting than anything your daughter would find on the Disney channel/etc.

I'd suggest you watch the first episode and then decide:

They are going to be premiering Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood on the Cartoon Network Saturday night at Midnight.

Brotherhood could be best described as a sister series to the original. It follows the manga (comic) storyline which the original branched off of as the comics weren't completed yet.

So just FYI for those that want to set your DVRs
