I watched it the first time, thought it was a little funny, nothing spectacular but nothing out of the ordinary, and thought nothing more of it. Now I see all these replies and I had to watch it again just to see if I missed something. I don't get what the big deal is. All Nash's commercials are basically like this.
But he is not portraying himself, not in a serious way anyhow. This commercial is clearly not intended to be taken seriously, so how can it become a part of his persona? Like his other commercials, this one is just poking fun at his character, in this case by exaggerating his competitive nature as well as contradicting his do-gooder persona. If, say, LeBron James did this, it wouldn't work. But Nash has a certain "mr. nice guy" reputation, so this commercial is definitely intended to play as "out of character". Especially with the "serious" voice-over about his competitive nature. I cannot believe people are reading way too much into this.
It reminded me of an episode of Seinfeld where Jerry wrestled an old lady for a loaf of bread. Certainly no one thought that was offensive or that it portrayed Jerry (the comedian/actor or the character) as mean-spirited. This is very much in the same vein, imo.
Man, this lockout better end soon, because this cannot be the only thing worth talking about around here.
Most of the comments here have been playful in nature, hopefully that's coming across. I certainly didn't find it offensive but I do consider it to be more mean spirited than funny. I recognize that it was an attempt at humor but as I said, it lost me when he raced to cut off the old lady. To my generation, that's pretty much the definition of mean spirited. It doesn't offend me though because clearly it was intended to be humorous.
As for the lockout, we're really going to be scraping the barrel for conversation starters in a few months. We might as well start a Tangent thread and put everything in there because we're going to have very few "on topic" things to discuss for quite some time. By the end of the year we'll probably be swapping astrological signs and arguing over recipes.
