I watched it the first time, thought it was a little funny, nothing spectacular but nothing out of the ordinary, and thought nothing more of it. Now I see all these replies and I had to watch it again just to see if I missed something. I don't get what the big deal is. All Nash's commercials are basically like this.

But he is not portraying himself, not in a serious way anyhow. This commercial is clearly not intended to be taken seriously, so how can it become a part of his persona? Like his other commercials, this one is just poking fun at his character, in this case by exaggerating his competitive nature as well as contradicting his do-gooder persona. If, say, LeBron James did this, it wouldn't work. But Nash has a certain "mr. nice guy" reputation, so this commercial is definitely intended to play as "out of character". Especially with the "serious" voice-over about his competitive nature. I cannot believe people are reading way too much into this.

It reminded me of an episode of Seinfeld where Jerry wrestled an old lady for a loaf of bread. Certainly no one thought that was offensive or that it portrayed Jerry (the comedian/actor or the character) as mean-spirited. This is very much in the same vein, imo.

Man, this lockout better end soon, because this cannot be the only thing worth talking about around here.

Most of the comments here have been playful in nature, hopefully that's coming across. I certainly didn't find it offensive but I do consider it to be more mean spirited than funny. I recognize that it was an attempt at humor but as I said, it lost me when he raced to cut off the old lady. To my generation, that's pretty much the definition of mean spirited. It doesn't offend me though because clearly it was intended to be humorous.

As for the lockout, we're really going to be scraping the barrel for conversation starters in a few months. We might as well start a Tangent thread and put everything in there because we're going to have very few "on topic" things to discuss for quite some time. By the end of the year we'll probably be swapping astrological signs and arguing over recipes.

As a fellow Steve, I'm going to have to agree with Steve. This one missed the mark. I find most of Nash's bits funny but this one fell flat. It was badly written and conceptualized.

Thumbs down.

Check out some of his Vitamin Water ads for a look at his finer work.

In a van...down by the river.
I thought it was funny. You see that the parking lot is empty, right? That makes the parody element strong enough that it can't be interpreted as mean-spirited, in my opinion.
Agree,it wasn't hilarious but it was funny.

Somebody needs to bookmark this post...E and i have never agreed on anything, including the color of the blue sky. :)

I googled villains named Steve and just about the only one who came up was indeed Steve McQueen. But then I googled milquetoast named steve and no one came up.

I guess you're just right down the middle, AzSteven.

It reminds me of what I was advised by a buddy in Basic Training. If you don't want to be made an example of, never stand on either end. Always in the middle.

The commercial was forced to say the least. Not to mention, they were fighting over a parking space surrounded by empty parking spaces.

The only thing I remember learning in Basic Training is don't stand next to a smoker. The guy next to me didn't put it out quick enough when we were called to attention and the drill instructor decided to make an example out of somebody. Unfortunately, the guy dropped his cigarette next to my feet and I was forced to run around a table chain smoking for 8 hours, on borrowed cigarettes no less since I was a non-smoker at the time.

If you have to explain it, it's usually not funny.

Nashty!

Now that he has changed his personality in the ad, Steve is really going to psyche out opposing Point Guards next season . . . if he plays in the WNBA.

No, Cheryl Miller will probably put on a uniform and hip-check him into the scorer's table. :D

I was thinking. If Steve Carrell or Christopher Walken or Leslie Neilsen had done that commercial, it would have been funny, because they established themselves (the last two during the latter stages of their careers) as buffoons.

Hey, there's a Steve.

But it was so out of character for Nash, it just wasn't smooth. Perhaps he should stick to producing videos and running for Mayor after he retires, rather than a career in comedy.

Leslie Nielsen could make anything funny. The ironic part of this, he did good drama before he turned to comedy.

You must not have seen his Arizona Federal Commercials toward the twilight of his life.

It just doesn't work because he's playing car-to-car defense. No one's going to buy that.
