I didn't realize this:

In another twist, when the NFL went to award the championship to the Cards, the Chicago team refused to accept the title, claiming that the honor should be won on the field. As a result, the award was never presented to anybody that year.

Since the title was never awarded, why would this be a curse on the Cards? It should be a curse on the NFL instead.

Sounds like the Cards were a pretty honorable team.

Yep, it does sound like the Pre-Bidwill ownership was pretty honorable.

So if it's pre Bidwill, why the curse on the Bidwill family and don't say it's Bill Bidwill who won't allow Pottsville to receive the trophy. That happened back in 1925. It would take 51% of the owners to vote to give it to them, not just the Cards. This whole thing about a curse doesn't make sense.

let's NOT be like Cubs fans - curses only work on those that believe in them.
It's a loser mentality.
Yes - I admit to cursing Bill Bidwill...

Despite all that, when the Bidwill family bought the Cardinals franchise in 1932 they still began to claim the 1925 championship as their very own. And when the Pottsville Maroons petitioned the league in 1963, Charles "Stormy" Bidwill Jr. wrote to sportswriter Red Smith poking fun of little Pottsville and saying his family had no intention of giving away their title. This is when most believe that Joe Zacko, a huge Maroons booster who owned the Pottsville landmark Zacko's Sporting Goods, placed his curse on the Cardinals. Since then the Cards have won exactly one playoff game.

In 2003 there was a chance to make everything right when Steelers owner Dan Rooney, Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie, Pennsylvania governor Ed Rendell and Pottsville mayor John Reiley came up with a solution that had then commissioner Paul Tagliabue's blessing: let the Cards and the Maroons share the title. Tagliabue had even begun to make plans to come to Pottsville to give the town its title back. Instead, Rooney and Reiley say that current Cardinals owner Bill Bidwill used his influence behind the scenes to squash the Maroons petition. The owners never even discussed the case, they voted 30-2 against even talking about it or hearing the Maroons case. Bidwill has since refused numerous interview requests on the topic.

Link to story.

NFL owners stick together on these things. They have nothing to lose by supporting the Bidwills and a lot to gain.

Pretty honorable? They play Pottsville in what they bill as a "championship" game only to lose giving Pottsville the NFL title. But to improve to the point that they can get it back, they play three quick games against substandard opponents, one of which was not even a full game. Then, when the "poo" hits the fan, they're too embarrassed to take the trophy, and that's honorable?

And before you go believing the harrowing story of the Pottsville franchise, consider also that they were warned, in writing, before playing in Philadelphia that it would cost them the championship and their franchise, but their greedy owner cared more about the revenue of the exhibition game than some stupid championship in what was then a lesser league, and besides, he thought the NFL would blink.

No one was honorable in the 1925 season, but as long as the NFL is acknowledging it, I have no problem with saying those Cards were NFL champs that year.

Amazing that Bill Bidwill can exert all this influence to get this squashed, but when it comes to video replay, he can't even get more than 2 votes to support his position.

And exactly what do the other NFL owners have to gain by refusing to give Pottsville a share of the trophy? Maybe they voted against it because they don't want to revisit something that happened over 75 years ago.

As usual, all we have are insinuations and innuendos.

EDIT: And another thing. If this curse was placed in 1963, why did the Cards not win a playoff game between 1925 and 1963 other than the 1947 edition. One title in 38 years? Also, how about the mid 70's when the Cards won 30+ games in a 3 season period. Is the curse just playoff games? If so, why haven't we had more winning seasons?

This curse is just like all superstitious nonsense. Based on half truths and myth.

The owners have a vested interest in video replay don't they? Some are for, some are against. As far as refusing to give Pottsville a share of the tropy I'll tell you what they have to gain - Bidwill's vote the next time he is on the fence.

No. 1, Bill Bidwill has never been on the fence about anything. You can spin this any way you want. Bill Bidwill has no more control over the other 31 owners than you or I have. These people are competitors, not friends.

I agree with that. I just think that it is compleately lame that the Bidwills have used their influence to deny Pottsville their share of the championship from 1925. Put the compromise from 2003 up to a vote again with the Bidwill's support. If the other owners deny it, it's on them, no question. Something tells me that the owners would vote to share it if the Bidwills supported it.

Talk about spin, you just spouted your opinion as if it was fact.

If you think that an owner doesn't have any influence over the other owners you are being miopic. Do you think that they bring something up to vote and there is no discussion on this? There is, and if there is that means that they are trying to control the vote. Finally, if you don't think that Bill Bidwill has any friends among the other owners, you have a lower opinion of him than "he that shall not be named".

And you know this because you were there for the vote? Yeah, right. You just love to bash for the sake of bashing.

Yep. That's me. Mr. Negativity. You would be hard pressed to show me as a "dark-sider" or "Bidwill basher" if you look at my history of posting on this message board.

Also, what are you saying that I know "because I was there"? That Bidwill pushed to reject the petition, or even the vote on the petition? I am basing my opinion on the fact that people that were there said that is what happened and Mr. Bidwill won't respond to requests for interviews on the subject. That's evidence. It's not some fairy tale that I'm dreaming up.

Unlike a lot of others I like and respect the Bidwills but that doesn't mean I close my eyes and mind when something happens that doesn't seem right. You seem to have that down to a science.

A week later, the Frankford Yellow Jackets (the team that later became the Eagles) protested that the Maroons had played the Notre Dame game in their "territory." The NFL suspended the Maroons, making them ineligible for the championship.

So how come the Eagles aren't part of this curse? They are the ones who took the title from Pottsville in the first place. Selective cursing or the curse don't apply because they have been winning?

When they deserve critisizm, I have no problem with it, but something like this is ridiculous.

Why would Bidwill respond to a request for an interview on this subject? He's never done interviews and in this instance no matter what he would say, he would be construed as the villian.

Hey, you're the one who posted the article calling it a curse to prove your point. Either your guy is right or he is wrong. Which is it?

OK and just because I'm a good guy, I'll let you have the last word. :)
