It took all of six weeks and 37 games for the Diamondbacks season to flush down the toilet. Another awful start to the season - and please don't expect this team to go 20-6 in June, as they did last year, because it is not going to happen - has spelled doom for the Diamond Duds. In the words of Bananarama, be ready for a Cruel Summer. If you thought that 27,750 fans for Randy Johnson-Tom Glavine was sad, just wait until you see what the crowds look like in June, July and August when there is nothing to play for and even the die-hard Diamondback fans, who are holding out hope right now, have thrown in the towel.

The reality is, Arizona is not a good baseball team. At best, it is an average team with a chance of hanging around .500. After starting the first two months of 2003 with a record of 25-30, it was imperative that Arizona got out of the gates with a quick start this season. It was all anyone would talk about during spring training, the importance of starting strong. But a 9-13 April, followed by a thus-far horrendous May in which they have gone 5-10, the Diamondbacks are sporting the second worst record in the National League and fifth worst in the major leagues. They are 8½ games behind the first-place Los Angeles Dodgers and no matter how many times you hear quotes from players saying that it's early, believe me, it's not. These games count as much as the ones in August and September.

Geez, he makes it sound like 8½ games at this point of the season is insurmountable. Not hardly

Yes, I understand that these games all count the same at the end. However I have to ask ... am I the only one that remembers how badly this team (even the World Series winning team) played around the All-Star game every season? Could it just be that they are on their annual slump early?

Now am I saying that they will win the NL West? No, but I am saying give it more than a month and a half to judge the team especially with our key hitter out with an injury (They were starting to get on a roll before he got hurt by consistently winning series).

Besides the point why trade RJ now when you can wait until the trade deadline when the demand for him will be higher?

It's about time that people stop taking Gambo so seriously. All he does is sensationalized journalism and I shouldnt be dignifying anything he writes with a response....It's simply a waste of time....

You definitely nailed it right there....The Dbacks had even more leverage with Schilling, but for some reason got damaged goods in return....They cant duplicate that with Johnson (that is if they do decide to trade him)...

I say wait till sexson come back.. if it gives D-backs a boost and they start making a run then dont trade Johnson.. If they continue to suck then ship him off. Remember they have 18 games with each team in the West. They still can come back. Giants face Dodgers and so does colorado. Each time division faces each other. One team has to loose. A 8 game lead isnt that big at this point of the season.

If we are still floundering at the All-Star break, then it might be time to ponder some personnel moves (including moving RJ if the price is right); it's still early enough to make up some ground, especially in a weak division like ours.

This was stupid when it came out - it's absurd now. Eat your word-processor, Gambo.

The only team in baseball that would take on that absurd contract that he is signed to.

absurd???

Please tell me you're being sarcastic. The guy is a sure-fire HOFer who also just happened to throw a perfect game today. His contract is well deserved

BTW Many of the rumors I heard about RJ say that if he was to be traded, he would go to Anaheim not to the Yankees

I gotta tell you - I'd be psyched IF we had to deal Johnson him going to the Angels - being in Socal - I hate the dodgers but find the Angels being my second favorite team - ever since they stomped on the Yankees - their team and ownership (lowering beer pirces was his first move last year) are the type of people I can root for - and if Randy went there I'd still be able to root for him - if he went to NY - I'd have to hate him just like the rest of that team and that would be a very difficult thing to do - afterall - he gave us our only title in the state and for that I will always try to cheer him on.

Problem was we'd be alot better if Mantei hadn't sucked so bad from the get go. No one could forsee that. And Brenly didn't help matters by sticking by him so long.

Fact is this team is better than it's playing. Everyone on that team would agree. That's why their so frustrated.

Also Sexson's injury occured at exactly the wrong moment. Just when he was gathering momemtum. The big M. Something the team has lacked. Everyone's throwing in the towel TOO SOON.

FACT IS 85-88 WINS takes the west this year. sit on that Gambo.

That would be kind of ironic since Nolan Ryan pitched for the Angels. I remembe many a game seated in the top deck and Ryan trying to get the last out. That top deck would leterally be rockin from all the foot stompin adn jumping and the noise was just defening(sp). The only time I can remembef BOB like that was during the world series.

This I agree with 100%. Nobody, and I mean nobody is untouchable if the team is still sucking it up at the All Star break. Not even RJ, who would likely veto almost any trade anyways so it is moot.

Perfect game was great and all but if he can fetch a huge price on the trade market to improve the Dbacks form the next 3-5 years, then I am all for it...but not unless the season is washed out around AllStar break time.
