It would be nice if the Cardinals could give Carson Palmer some max protection early in the games because for the past few weeks he has been getting drilled hard on the first possession on hits that could be prevented. The thing is---teams know that the Cardinals have been coming out of the gates fast, so they are trying to spoil Palmer from the get-go---and the Cardinals' tackles do not have anyone near as athletic to block on the edges in practice, so there needs to be some chipping and an adjustment period before they can adapt to the speed of the rush.

The way Palmer is getting hit early is akin to a prize fighter getting cold-cocked on the first punch of the bout. Coaches talk about making a statement early, as in let your man know it is going to be a long, tough day. It took Palmer a few series last week to get his feet and composure back---same this week---as evidenced by the rushed throw he made on third down that resulted this time in a pick six.

However, Palmer is one tough cookie, isn't he? Down 10 point on the road before a raucous, fired-up Cowboys' crowd, Palmer regained his feet and his composure and what he was able to do on third downs after that was spectacular.

Andre Ellington was able to bounce outside a number of occasions---the three sweetest of which were the fake hitch pass left, screen pass right that Lyle Sendlein led for a big gain---the sweet slip to the flat TD on third and goal to give the Cardinals a two score lead---and the hurry-up sweep right after the spectacular Ginn Jr. catch. Ellington had another twenty or so yards called back on penalties---but he is running super smart---squirming for as much as he can get and diving under direct hits like a surfer diving under waves.

It was great to see Marion Grice get his feet wet---certainly BA and the team are going to need a good number two RB to go to so as not to keep too much burden on Sir Juke. Plus, Robert Hughes atoned for an earlier drop and botched kickoff gaffe when he split the seam for a beautiful reception down the Cowboys' five yard line. That pass was a thing of beauty---boy does Carson Palmer throw a clean, tight spiraled pass, as he did on the beautiful TDs to John Carlson and to Jaron Brown.

The Cardinals' o-line made some mistakes---but when it mattered most, especially in the red zone, they kept Palmer clean. These boys play very physical football---much more so that people think. They had the Cowboys' d-line banged up and gassed in the 4th quarter.

One point that deserves emphasis here is that not only is Carson Palmer showing exemplary toughness---how about Larry Fitzgerald? Fitz made the absolutely most of every one of the 70 yards he amassed in this game. The fade pick pass set up perfectly by Ted Ginn Jr. was perfecto---moreover, the balls Fitz caught over the middle and broke tackles on were huge advances into the red zone. Fitz's leadership is bound to have a positive effect on Michael Floyd who this week will understand how to tuck the ball in and drive it upfield instead of racing skittishly sideways. And Fitz's toughness should rub off on John Brown who may have heard footsteps on a perfect 20 yard pass that he dropped over the middle. I don't know about you, but after that drop i just gave him a mulligan for having come up with one of the most brilliant catches in Cardinals' history versus the Eagles.

On defense, after the 10-0 deficit, they put the clamps on the Dallas offense in impressive fashion---by corralling, slowing and punishing DeMarco Murray. Dan The Man Williams dominated the interior of the Cowboy's good, young, physical line, while Calais Campbell, Frostee Rucker, Tommy Kelly and Ed Stinson all made big stops, the best fo which may have been Stinson's quick takedown of Brandon Weeden on a scramble that looked like it would extend a key drive---which then set up the fantastic 4th down stop on Murray that Williams and Campbell stone walled and Deone Bucannon finished. Stinson's inside quickness has become quite an asset versus scrambling QBs.

The linebackers were solid---Larry Foote, per usual. And while Acho, Okafor and Alexander lack the edge speed one desires and often needs, they are fundamentally sound and very physical.

The secondary was outstanding in this game. Sure, Peterson had the penalties again, but he played and worked his butt off versus Dez Bryant and not only nullified him but got into his head. But, the other CBs and safeties were just as stingy in this game. Honey Badger and Red Cro had beautifully played interceptions---and it might actually be good to have Honey Badger and Red Cro impress upon Patrick Peterson that when he plays the right angles and uses his superior athleticism to his advantage, he really doesn't have to hold or to panic on plays. Bucannon and Johnson were solid and made noise on their tackles---and it was extra great to give Tony Jefferson a week to shake the cobwebs off.

The blocked field goal was a thing of beauty---Justin Bethel was like a racehorse out of the gate and he planed out perfectly for the block, while Patrick Peterson made a great play on the ball and would have scored had not savvy veteran Jason Whitten taken a textbook pursuit angle on the play.

The Cardinals' success stems form the coaches having the players mentally and physically prepared for the plethora of situations that arise in a football game. Like BA says, it isn't always pretty and it often isn't going to be. But the preparation is pretty danged impressive.

Good analysis, Mitch. One thing that i am impressed with is that BA & staff actually make half time adjustments that work. In the past this seemed to be more like "lip service".

When you're 7 & 1 there is little to gripe about... Still, I am very uneasy with our backup running back situation, as well as our OLB situation. If Ellington were to go down and miss any meaningful time, it will create a monster hole in our offense.
And while our OLB's are fundamentally ok, they are slow and unathletic. I'm always amazed that opposing offenses haven't found a way to expose them more often - credit to Bowles I guess!
Also, on that 4th down stoppage of Murray, I believe Bucannon actually got to Murray first, even before he made contact with the line! Deone has been amazingly solid and is getting more comfortable with each passing week!

Great read as always. Awesome team victory, contributions all over the place. I saw a touchdown saving tackle on a punt return from Butler. Also continue to be impressed with Carson and Arians' ability to push the ball down the field. Playing against the Cards you must defend against the deep ball at all times. I love the deep passes, even on third and short. It shows so much confidence in the offense.

Mitch, I love the idea of providing Max-Protect for Palmer early on. He has been targeted early lately, and that could go far towards keeping him clean.

I am glad that you pointed out just how badly our O-line dominated the Dallas D-line. In the 4th quarter, they sent the brash young Dallas D-linemen to the bench, (one after the other), with hurt and pain they could no longer endure. This line PUNISHED the young Dallas D-line. That was great to see. It is only by running the ball late in the game that you can accomplish this feat. Doing so, (and imposing their will on the defense), is one way of truly rewarding the O-line. Nothing else can be so satisfying to an O-line as imposing their will on the opponent and humbling them, and to do it on National TV, in their home field, is like icing on the cake.

Fitz really was the man out there Sunday. What a treasure he is when he really gets into a game. He is infectious on the rest of the offense, just like Dockett is to the defense when he is in there.

Thanks again for pointing out how BA and his staff have prepared these guys for situational football. To a man, they have absorbed the teaching like a sponge, and each time it is squeezed, the teaching comes to the surface where it can be applied. The players all know what to do in each case, because they have already gone over these situations in practice time after time. When we win these situations, we win games. It is that simple.

Thanks again for yet another great analysis of the latest game. Like BA and his staff, you are a treasure trove of knowledge that we have posting here on this board. We truly appreciate your efforts, and look forward to them.

It is hard to protect against quick, interior pressure even with max protection.

Mitch whats your take on Minter? 13 snaps wow! I really like how they have enfolded Bu"cannon". Its fun to look at the Cards official depth chart and see Mintor Listed as #1 ILB and Bucannon as #2 SS.

That TD pass that Ellington caught out in the flat was a tough catch. It was behind him and low and he reached back and made it look easy. I have seen many, many backs drop a pass like that.

Palmer plays with a lot of guts. For the past few years, I have believed that all this team needed was a competent QB--one that makes good plays and takes care of the ball, but doesn't have to be a super star. Thats what Palmer is. Its amazing how taking care of the ball can have the same results as being a miracle worker QB.

As far as QB pressure goes it isn't our tackles I worry about. Our guards may get Palmer killed. The first sack of the game Larsen completely whiffed on his guy.

Have to give Cooper a shot.

If I can get through a game without shouting expletives at Carlson, I'll be happy

Good stuff Mitch. This coaching staff is amazing. Just listened to a Paulie Pigskin report and told a great story that I feel compelled to share.

Bowles walked into the Dline meeting room on Wednesday and said we are going with the 4-3 this week. Bowles went on to say this means if we lose the game it's the Dlines fault. Let that sink in for a minute. Coincidence that Dumpster Dan had his best game ever? All week Buckner was all over the Dline and coaching them even harder than usual.

We wouldn't have been in that position on that punt return if one of our guys weren't blasted in the back right between the numbers, right in front of the official...with no flag BTW. The officiating in this game was atrocious.

I was mentioning the 4-3 during the game, Bowles made a ballsy great call there.

The first hit Palmer took wasn't because the Tackles were beaten by more athletic ends, but because Larsen got abused on the inside.

3 things:

1. What did you guys think about that screen play that Dallas ran early in the game? It was perfectly set up and we were lucky they didn't get even more yards out of it. I was wondering why we haven't been burned by the screen pass more. Do we usually have guy spy the RB who blew the assignment on the play or are we going to see more screens set up when we do our jailbreak blitzes?

2. Carlson did have a touchdown, but other than that catch that was put right in his breadbasket, he had a pretty bad game. I know we need a pass rusher but would anyone be upset if we used a high pick on a Tight End next year? At what point does Niklas get some looks on offense? he can't be much worse than this.

3. The gap between the center play of Travis Frederick and Lyle Sendlein is huge. I remember when the Cowboys picked Frederick in the first the ESPN analysts all said it was too early to draft a center and that Frederick was rated as a 3rd round prospect. The guy is good and I think any team would be happy to have him taking on DTs one on one. I would really love to see us get a dominating center at some point.

Chopper answers this but I've also seen our Dline recognize the screen earlier and break off their pass rush and head straight towards the RB etc and break up or stop it for little gain.

I'm fine with taking a TE early but the Pass Rush MUST be addressed before doing so. Someone in FA and then an early draft pick, hopefully in the 1st rd.

Well Juke did have more yards and a better RPA then Murray so I'm not sure huge is the term I'd use. Bowles made sure he put someone over Frederick most of the time and he's not use to that and it made him relatively ineffective IMO. Dan Williams is our NT who had probably his best game as a pro and he was lined up over Frederick a bunch so.....

Good read but everyone knows the Cowboys would have won with Romo at QB, at least everyone at ESPN that is. Listening to those clowns you'd think the cowboys had lost to Jacksonville. They forget to mention that the Cards beat them in EVERY PHASE of the game and beat them badly. CP doesn't throw a pick 6 and this game was never even remotely in question. Hell, it never was anyway.

Agreed. We dominated this game from start to finish. We gave up a garbage-time TD but other than that we only gave up 3 points defensively. I thought it was our best played game in every phase so far this year.

As far as them not having Romo, I don't even kind-of care. Not even a little. They lost to Washington and we swept their division. They can say whatever they want, that's fine, we beat them and everyone else in their division.

That garbage time TD was frustrating and BA even commented on it during the locker room game speech. I love that he is always sending a message.

What I am really nervous about is how the offense doesn't stay consistent. They have alot of 3 and outs or drives killed by dropped passes or bad play calls. Right now, I feel this team can beat any team but 2, Denver and New England. The D will be able to handle either of those teams, but if the offense can't get things done, the D will fall. I just hope the O gets better and more connected in the next few games. If not, I am not sure we can bet the 2 teams I mentioned.

It seemed to me that Cardinals took a page out of the Bronco's playbook and ran a ton of pick plays against the Cowboys.

I think they tricked us but I also think they had at least 3 players downfield early on that screen I was really suprised to not see a flag.
