Bummer. I was looking forward to seeing what he could do with the first team on kickoffs.

While this sucks right now, it may ultimately be good for Garvin. He can go on IR and then be signed to the practice squad mid season. No pressure to perform right away.

Not good for a guy whose main talent is speed...

Sorry to see it happen.

Yep. Probably means that he will never see action again. Shame.

I guess we will see Stephens-Howling back there?

As with Boldin it really depends on the individual, meniscus is often not a big deal these days. Of course for Garvin trying to make the roster it's a huge deal he's very unlikely to play this year for us now.

We gotta get a return guy from somewhere, I really don't like using Breaston or Rolle on returns, too valuable elsewhere.

Boldin already had more tools than just speed though. Garvin is a borderline 53 man roster player with his all world speed. If he loses that speed, then he just doesn't have enough tools as it is to be able to make an NFL roster.

I mean that the injury really varies person to person. A torn meniscus can be a very minor injury these days. The problem for Garvin is by the time he's healthy his chances of winning a roster spot are probably gone. I would assume we'll try to put him on IR or something, if he goes on the practice squad someone might pluck him away when he's healthy.

I don't think Garvin has a past history of knee problems so this would probably be a minor setback if he were an established player, the problem is he's very much on the roster bubble, so getting hurt is a big problem.

They can just put him on the PUP list, right? Then he has until the 6th game to be activated to the regular roster.

nope -- once you activate somebody (which Garvin was) -- its really two options:

Injured Reserve -- gone for the season

Waived with a injury settlement-- once through waivers, the Cards could resign him to the practice squad (or the active roster for that matter)

Once a player steps on the practice field during training camp he's ineligible for the PUP list. The most famous instance of this was when Dallas' Greg Ellis, attempting to recover from an Achilles' injury, lasted just a couple of minutes into the first practice of camp before complaining of pain and he eventually the entire training camp and first three games of the 2007 season. LINK

From the ESPN article:
Ellis could go on injured reserve, but that would wipe out his entire season. He can't go on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list because he's already participated in a practice, even if it was only the initial few minutes of the very first one.

If he's only going to be out 2 weeks, he may be put on the practice squad, depending how the others fair at returning kicks.

There goes his chance.

Well, we might be able to sign him for the practice squad at least now.
