Steve Keim, in an interview with Kent Somers, talked about the DL. He said that we had enough youth, Martin and Stinson, but that we needed more experience for depth. Hence, we added Kelly and subtracted Gaston. But Mitch raises a good question, whether we should have kept Gaston and cut Stinson. Coaches saw them both on a daily basis and hopefully made the correct decision.
I had speculated in my roster prediction that Stinson was the least likely to get claimed off waivers because he is small for a 34DE and is not athletic enough to play 43DE. Gaston has the size that teams covet. The Patriots like their interior d-linement to be thick and strong. They would not have claimed Stinson. He doesn't fit their mold.
In yet another chapter of BA's wishful thinking out loud---can anyone explain why Stinson is being hailed as the next Dockett? Is there anything even remotely similar about their games and style of play?
There were numerous occasions this pre-season where Stinson stood up too early on the snap (bad habit), got locked down by the guard and the RB ran right past him and even then he didn't even react, he just stayed glued to the guard. He got no penetration---not even once. All he did was thud with the guard and get stood up.
Gaston, conversely, knocked blockers backward, tossed them aside and made plays on the ball. Plus, he got one of the 2 QB hits of the evening, in addition to 6 tackles (5 solo).
The thing about Stinson is---he's not a pass rusher, never was, even at Alabama. But at his size can he ever be a legitimate run stuffer in the NFL?
