There’s no figure in the history of women’s college basketball that’s quite as accomplished as Geno Auriemma.
The UConn coach won his 12th national championship Sunday, when his Huskies blew past South Carolina 82-59 and padded his lead for the most titles among Division I basketball coaches, men’s or women’s. His 1,250 career wins are the most of any college basketball coach at any level of the sport, men’s or women’s.
Over his 40 years at UConn, he has made 24 Final Fours, averaged more than 30 wins per season, and recruited and developed some of the best women’s basketball players ever at any level, a group that includes Diana Taurasi, Sue Bird, Maya Moore, Breanna Stewart and Tina Charles, among others.

Not surprisingly, one of the icons of the sport is paid like one.
As his Huskies celebrate their most recent title, and their first since 2016, here’s a closer look at Auriemma’s salary:
Auriemma signed a contract extension in May 2024 that calls for him to be paid $18.7 million over a five-year period ending April 14, 2025, according to a copy of the contract obtained by USA TODAY Sports. The contract ends after the 2028-29 season, at which point he'll be 75 years old.
Auriemma was the second-highest paid women’s basketball coach this season, behind only South Carolina’s Dawn Staley. Auriemma is being paid $3.34 million from UConn for the year that started on April 15, 2024. He also earned $737,500 in bonuses, which includes $300,000 for winning the national championship. In total, Auriemma’s take for this season is $4,077,500.
On April 15, 2025, Auriemma’s pay from the school is set to increase by $200,000 to $3.54 million.

Over his 40 seasons at UConn, where he has spent his entire career as a college head coach, Auriemma has gone 1,250-165. Excluding his first three seasons, when he went 43-39 building up a program that had gone 36-74 in the four seasons before he took over, the Huskies have gone 1,207-126, a win percentage of .905.
UConn has won at least 30 games in 28 of the past 32 seasons.
Auriemma turned 71 in March. On Sunday, he became the oldest Division I basketball coach, men’s or women’s, to lead his team to a national championship.
