Colgate women’s basketball coach Ganiyat Adeduntan has been hired to lead George Washington’s women’s basketball program, a source briefed on the matter said Thursday.Adeduntan spent four seasons on Jenn Rizzotti’s GW staff from 2017 to 2021 before being named Colgate’s head coach. At Colgate, Adeduntan took the program from 6-24 in her first season (2021-22) to 23-9 this past season. Prior to her arrival, the Raiders had only won double-digit games in three of the previous 11 seasons. They finished with at least 15 wins in three of her four years.
George Washington last made it to the NCAA Tournament in 2018, but has made it to the Sweet 16 four times and the Elite Eight once (1997). At Colgate, Adeduntan ran a stout defense that held opponents to fewer than 59 points a game in her final three seasons.
Former GW coach Caroline McCombs stepped down from her post in late February after going 55-65 over the previous four seasons.
“GW women’s basketball has a proud tradition of excellence, including 18 NCAA Tournament appearances and 23 combined Atlantic 10 regular season and tournament titles,” athletic director Michael Lipitz said at the time. “We are committed to returning the program to the top of the A-10 Conference and to national prominence.”
