Georgia Bulldogs star edge rusher Mykel Williams is receiving "real interest" from the Carolina Panthers, according to Joe Person of the Athletic. Williams is a projected first-round pick in the 2025 NFL draft. The Panthers could be a landing spot for Williams in the first-round of April's draft.
The Panthers added several quality players in NFL free agency, such as safety Trevor Moerhig and defensive linemen Treshawn Wharton and Bobby Brown. However, Carolina didn't fully address their weakness at edge rusher, and they could with the No. 8 overall pick.
Williams is a talented edge rusher from Georgia. He joined the Bulldogs as a five-star recruit. He earned 4.5 sacks in each of his first two seasons, and in his junior season, Williams improved to five sacks despite missing some time with an ankle injury. According to him, it lingered for so long that he was "never healthy" in 2024, making it even more impressive that he made the second All-SEC team.
His size (6-foot-5, 260 pounds) and athleticism are arguably the biggest draw for teams. He's considered one of the top edge rushers in the draft outside of Abdul Carter. Although Carolina has been predicted by several mock drafts to draft Georgia linebacker Jalon Walker, adding Williams would bring the first Georgia Bulldog to their current roster.
If Carolina drafts either Williams or Walker, then many Atlanta Falcons fans will likely be jealous. The Falcons need a pass rusher, but don't pick until the No. 15 selection in the first-round.
