A Georgia football offensive lineman who is expected to compete for a starting job this season is sidelined after a recent foot injury, coach Kirby Smart said Tuesday.

Redshirt freshman Daniel Calhoun, from Walton High, is out for the rest of the spring.

Georgia lost four offensive starters from last year’s team who are pursuing NFL careers.

The 6-foot-6, 325-pound Calhoun is competing to start at right guard.

“He was doing a great job competing for one of the starting guard spots,” Smart said. “It’s not a major injury. It’s just one that’s going to cost him the next three weeks.”

Smart also said he expects punter Brett Thorson, who underwent knee surgery in his non-kicking leg late last season, to be back for the season opener.

“I think so,” Smart said. “I haven’t really looked at it, but that’s a typical nine-month injury, six-month injury. It varies from person to person. …It’s significant that he is planting, he goes up one foot, he kicks and he comes back down. That’s significant, but I feel good about it.”

Thorson was injured in the SEC championship game win over Texas.

Smart said he also feels good with Drew Miller, who made his collegiate punting debut in the Sugar Bowl loss to Notre Dame in place of Thorson.

Georgia held its seventh of 15 spring practices on Tuesday.

The G-Day spring game is scheduled for Saturday April 12 at 1 p.m.
