For the record, I love having Gerald Hayes as the run-stuffing MLB on our team. He's among my favorite players. Hard working, effective at his job and a low maintenance athlete.

Hayes was interviewed on Gambo's show this past week. I was stunnned by what I heard and have lost what little respect I had for U. of Pittsburgh.

He cannot speak in sentences. Grammar is alien to him. His vocabulary is stunted. His command of the language is below what I would expect from a kid in 1st grade.

I am convinced he could not write a one page report in any high school freshman English class and get any grade but F.

In my opinion, the only way this man could have made it through high school and college without flunking out is by repeated, intentional grade fixing by teachers and administrators at all the schools he attended.

KTAR has podcasts of interviews on their websites. You should find Hayes' interview there to judge for yourselves.

C'mon Jim, you should have stopped after the first two sentences. Someone who is a poor public speaker stayed eligible at a D-1 school? Color me shocked.

Jim, I have no idea where you are going with this.

Here is an mp3 link to the interview.

He is not a great public orator, but that interview sounded fine for any pro athlete. He answered all the questions and sounded fine to me.

The Cards did not draft him to write essays or give speeches. They drafted him to hit people and cause turnovers.

I'll go listen again. Maybe I'm unfair. It just struck me at the time, while sitting in a Best Buy parking lot, as being horrible. I was embarrassed for the guy.

interview

my wife came home after listening to this on the radio the other day and said almost the same thing as Skorp. He's a good football player, though. I still love having him as a Cardinal... he just needs to save some of the money, as it is unlikely he will go into broadcasting after the fact.

jw7, I just listened to it again and yes, I was too harsh. Hayes is not dumb and sounded to be a fine man and teammate.

My first impression though, was reinforced. (I should have put this whole thread on the college board or politics board, not here.)

Gerald Hayes can probably not write a coherent short letter. The educational system both used and abused him, in my opinion and maybe he them, in return.

My apologies for raising this issue here.

Again, as a Cards fan, I'm happy Hayes is ours and is a true professional. I wish some of our other stars were as strong in character as Gerald seems to be.

Thanks, TigToad, for posting that. When I started the thread I wondered if anybody heard it the same way I did. Your whole post states the way I feel.

Thank your wife for me. She is a Goddess. My Athena, Goddess of Wisdom as well as a warrior goddess, as befits a Cardinals fan. You married well. Unless, of course, she likes the Cowpukes or you guys are having troubles. In that case, disregard.

I can remember Leonard Davis being interviewed one time and he sounded like a caveman. Very difficult to understand and lots of mumbling.

Microphones do very odd things to people Jim, I know it happened to me one day on KTAR.

Went from educated and eloquent to caveman in 2 sec flat

Skorp, I think your first take on the interview was wrong and am glad you've changed your mind. But you did make a good point, though that might not have been your intention. Hayes, along with Marcel Shipp comes from Patterson, NJ, an inner city with a crime problem. I'm sure his formative years were spent honing his sports' skills, probably to the detriment of his academic skills. My point (and what I think you were pointing out, without saying so) is that the team should offer their players, and maybe they do, classes in public speaking, and how to respond to being interviewed. Gerald comes across as a nice guy, IMO.

Exactly. He is a solid MLB for Cards with potential to improve. That's all that matters.

Emmitt Smith is getting away with this as an ESPN analyst. Sad.

Jerry Rice on Sirius. I actually refuse to listen when he is on. I can't hear one more "uh" filled sentences or "ff" substituting for "th" sound in every word to realize that on field performance means little when it comes to public speaking. He will actually stop a sentence to say "you know" three or four times. It is miserable.

I'll let her know.. she'll enjoy being a goddess. Its always possible she'll read the thread, she drops by from time to time. Of course the first topic she started she got flamed, so she hasn't done a lot of posting in the last few years.

She's a Bears fan actually... was only ever a problem the once. Hah. She goes to all the games with me though and wears her Tillman jersey and roots for the Cardinals against the other 30 teams.

His son is being considered for Ivy league schools.

I wasn't saying Jerry was lacking in intelligence, just he shouldn't be on the radio.

im sorry but this whole argument is just ridiculous. if you guys don't like the way these guys talk, work as hard as them so you can get on the radio based on name alone.
