im sorry but this whole argument is just ridiculous. if you guys don't like the way these guys talk, work as hard as them so you can get on the radio based on name alone.

LOL the funniest part is I am not sure if you are defending Rice or giving him a backhanded compliment. I am not sure how it is ridiculous to expect a brodcast journalist to be able to brodast in a coherent way, but to each his own. I was not arguing a point really (although the thread was started to debate the issue of athletics and scholastics at the college level). My comment was strictly to agree with a fellow poster that some ex players are put in a position to voice thier expertise and it doesn't come across as being very proficient as a journalist. In the search of "the inside scoop" or "football insight" it seems that being able to use proper grammer is lost.

Jerry Rice on Sirius. I actually refuse to listen when he is on. I can't hear one more "uh" filled sentences or "ff" substituting for "th" sound in every word to realize that on field performance means little when it comes to public speaking. He will actually stop a sentence to say "you know" three or four times. It is miserable.

I've thought the exact same thing. Jerry Rice can not make it through 3 sentences without 'ugh' 5-6 times. He absolutely sucks as a radio host. I've thought about calling in...but figure they'll cut me off. Rice is one of the worst if not the worst to listen to. Here's a typical J. Rice answer...Caller "Jerry - You were my favorite player, it's good to talk to you. What do you think about the O line of Arizona?' Jerry - "Well thank you, ugh, ugh, Arizona's O line ugh is well doing better after their ugh ugh 8 and 8 record ugh of last year. I see them ugh as improving this year ugh if they can keep ugh working with Russ Grimm. - No JOKE

Hayes - I'm not sure about his intelligence, but I'll agree with the post about having a Mic in front of you.

It's very possible any and all of the combo's mentioned are correct.

He's not here to build us all nuclear reactors or find new sources of energy. He's here to play football. Last I checked I've never listened to one sentence he's said on the field. The day the NFL institutes a spelling contest into the game we'll cut him. Till then keep playing G Hayes...keep playing.

Gerald Hayes isn't a broadcast journalist.

and neither is Jerry Rice. he is the greatest wide reciever of all time (statistically for now (Boldin)) so no matter how he says it, its more interesting than gambo and ash acting like they know what they are talking about.

No, he WAS a wide receiver, now he IS a broadcast journalist on Sirius Radio. They pay him to come on the radio for several hours at a time, take calls, give opinions, etc. There is a term for that..... I think it is... Oh yeah, Broadcast Journalist. They didn't hire him to play football, they hired him to talk about football.

Now, yes he is interesting because of his world of knowledge, etc. As is the previous poster's comment about Emmitt. However, the guy can't carry a radio show (his new profession) worth a darn. In fact, his proficiency as a broadcast journalist are so bad, I can't get past it to even register his knowledge. That's a bad thing for a broadcast journalist.

no, he is a former player on the radio. i doubt he got a journalism degree, and there is no way he did an internship to earn his way through sirius radio. he is on the radio as a former player.

Funny, I thought your job decides your profession, not your degree or education. Your arguement has become silly, so I will stop trying to debate with you.

For the record, I love having Gerald Hayes as the run-stuffing MLB on our team. He's among my favorite players. Hard working, effective at his job and a low maintenance athlete.

Hayes was interviewed on Gambo's show this past week. I was stunnned by what I heard and have lost what little respect I had for U. of Pittsburgh.

He cannot speak in sentences. Grammar is alien to him. His vocabulary is stunted. His command of the language is below what I would expect from a kid in 1st grade.

I am convinced he could not write a one page report in any high school freshman English class and get any grade but F.

In my opinion, the only way this man could have made it through high school and college without flunking out is by repeated, intentional grade fixing by teachers and administrators at all the schools he attended.

KTAR has podcasts of interviews on their websites. You should find Hayes' interview there to judge for yourselves.

I think that you are being very judgemental based on that interview. I know that some time has passed, but I was googling some info and came across this. I went to Pitt with Gerald and he is a really cool person. I felt a little offended because he is far from dumb or incapable of writing a paper. As individuals we all have strengths and weaknesses. Maybe public speaking is not a strengh of his; Maybe his educational system has failed him in some way; Maybe his nerves just got the best of him. Do we know if he was having a bad day? There can be many factors that play into not being orator of the year. How well would you do during a public interview? It's so easy for people to criticize others. Were you a straight A student? What did your last employee evaluation look like?

FYI I hope that your job or school challenges you in some way. Living is about growing and as we face new challenges we should conquer them. If this is an area that he would like to make improvements in, he will!
