Yannick Hanfmann scored a big upset on Tuesday when he ousted freshly crowned Miami Masters champion Jakub Mensik 7-6 (7-4), 4-6, 6-3, in front of a German home crowd at the BMW Open.

Wildcard entry Hanfmann won the final three points in the first set tie-break and a break in the second game of the final set paved the way to the way to a surprise victory in Munich over the sixth-seeded Czeck Mensik.

Mensik, 19, had just over a week ago won the Miami title in the final against Novak Djokovic.

World number 131 Hanfmann recorded only his third victory of the year in the first round match.

“It means a lot, coming off kind of a rough stretch of matches. I knew the level was there, but you never know when it’s going to click, when it’s going to come. It came in Munich today," the ATP website quoted Hanfmann as saying.

"I know that I like the conditions here, so also grateful to the tournament for giving me the opportunity with the wild card. Amazing feeling."

Hanfmann will next play Tallon Griekspoor while lucky loser Botic van de Zandschulp set up a second-round meeting with second seed Ben Shelton by beating Roberto Bautista Agut 6-4, 3-6, 6-4.

Recent Marrakesh champion Luciano Darderi edged Christopher O’Connell 7-6 (7-3), 7-6 (7-3), while German teen-aged talent Justin Engel was ousted 6-4, 6-1 by Fabian Marozsan.
