Steve Carrell in 'Get Smart'
Source: Variety

Warner Bros. has finally found a star to anchor its bigscreen version of the sitcom classic "Get Smart".

Steve Carell -- formerly a field reporter on Comedy Central's "The Daily Show" and a supporting player in such films as "Bruce Almighty" and "Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy" -- is making a deal to play bumbling secret agent Maxwell Smart. The role was originated memorably by Don Adams during the original 1965-70 series run and again in bigscreen spinoff "The Nude Bomb".

A script will be tailored for Carell by Steve Koren, whose recent credits include "Bruce Almighty" and the Adam Sandler vehicle "Click".

Warner Bros. has been trying for several years to make a film from the secret-agent comedy, created by Mel Brooks and Buck Henry, which pitted Agents 86 and 99 against the evil forces of KAOS. Will Ferrell had been attached as recently as last year, but the project languished due to his busy schedule.

Carell can be seen in Woody Allen's ensemble comedy "Melinda and Melinda". He also stars in NBC's Americanized version of British comedy "The Office". He'll get his first lead role in New Line's "Furry Vengeance"

Am I aging myself if I admit that I saw "The Nude Bomb" in a theater? :D

Peter Segal Gets Smart
Source: The Hollywood Reporter
December 3, 2005

Peter Segal will direct Get Smart, the big-screen adaptation of the classic TV series for Warner Bros. Pictures, says The Hollywood Reporter.

Steve Carell is attached to star as hapless secret agent Maxwell Smart, who was played by the late Don Adams on the small screen. Created by Mel Brooks and Buck Henry, the series saw Adams act as Agent 86, a spy for CONTROL, fighting the evil forces of KAOS.

The big-screen version, which has just undergone a rewrite by Tom Astle and Matt Ember, will contemporize the setting, with CONTROL falling on hard times and not getting the big government funding other spy agencies, like the CIA, do.

I never knew Mel Brooks was in on the show.

Well, I'm not thrilled with the idea of making it into a movie, but with the interesting casting, I might check it out.

Chief should be the guy who plays Peter Parkers boss in Spiderman and was in Thank You For Smoking.

J.K. Simmons (also Dr. Skoda on Law & Order) would be great for that role.

I think Will Ferrell should play the head of KAOS. I think he could do the kind of German accent that he did in The Producers and be pretty funny. I'm soo excited for this movie. Also the entire series, all 5 seasons, is now on DVD.

The Rock and Stamp Get Smart
Source: Variety
January 17, 2007

Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson and Terence Stamp are set to join Steve Carell and Anne Hathaway in Get Smart.

According to Variety, shooting begins next month on the Peter Segal-directed comedy for Warner Bros. and Village Roadshow Pictures.

While the comedy is based on the 1965 Mel Brooks/Buck Henry-created sitcom, the Rock will play the newly created character Agent 23. Stamp will play an evil leader.

Tom Astle and Matt Ember wrote the script.

Andrew Lazar, Charles Roven and Alex Gartner are producing the pic, which is a co-production between Mosaic Media Group, Mad Chance and Callahan Filmworks.

"Get Smart" will shoot in L.A., D.C. and Moscow, starting Feb. 3 and wrapping in July. Segal said the premise has been contemporized, but they have managed to retain such sitcom touchstones as the "cone of silence," the shoe phone and the original cars driven by Smart.

Good choice.

They both look great! I loved Get Smart as a kid...they better have the whole doors opening/closing thing or I'll be MAD.

I'm going to be touring a window factory that makes sound-abating windows. I made a joke to one of my (younger) co-workers about having them make us a Cone of Silence.

I got this in return: :|

Then I had to explain it, and it didn't turn out nearly as amusing as it might have been if she'd just seen the damned show.

Strange that BIM didn't make a thread for this, the biggest release of this past weekend.

I saw it last week in a preview and I was very pleasantly surprised. It was a pretty good spy parody that works all around. Having never had much exposure to the TV show, perhaps my view would be different from someone that had seen the original, but I thought it was very entertaining, and from what I hear, 10 times the movie The Love Guru is.

The show was great. The movie looks like a rental for me, especially after I heard an NPR review that said it had a hard time figuring out if it was a comedy or a spy flick...and it failed at both as a result.

Also something that reviewer said that I thought was interesting: they didn't make Maxwell Smart a complete bumbler like Don Adams played him. They said it took away from some of the charm of the film. Thoughts about that from those who've seen it?

How did they make this decision? That and his voice made up the only appeal of the show.

I wouldn't call him a "bumbler", I'd call him someone who is confident in abilities he doesn't really have. I liked the fact that they didn't make him out to be an idiot, which would have been easy to do. He thinks he is good agent material, but all he really is is a good analyst.

I liked the movie. It was fun and funny. Nothing great, just a good theatre experience.

Over the top action, but that was expected.

Anne Hathaway. Wow.

I liked that Agent 86 was not only a smart analyst but he ended up being a good agent because he was a smart analyst.

Effective through ineffectiveness? I saw it and was wondering the same thing, expecting more jokes at "Smart"'s expense.

Also true, but he had moments where he was a stellar field agent, which was fine for the movie, but didn't feel overly Get Smart for me.

Yup, although she had a lot of makeup on. Ladies, if you've got the looks, lessen the makeup, it only makes you more appealing.

Steve did a great job being someone else, not once during the flick did I think, "Hey, it's Micheal Scott!". Good for him.
