Dont see a thread, hadnt even heard of it till it hit netflix. Watched it last night. Its good, kept me engaged, entertaining movie. Reminded me a lot of payback with a different setting but I loved payback too.

Mel Gibson did an excellent job.

I had this on my queue for a long time before I finally watched it and was pleasantly surprised. Like him or hate him, Mel Gibson is pretty good in these kind of violent con-man type of roles.

My wife and I both enjoyed it quite a bit. Just out of curiosity, do prisons set up like that one actually exist in Mexico? I don't mean with all the corruption, just the city-like environment and access to and from.

My lady had a very similar question, my guess was no. Good movie though.

Really? And how did you come by that guess? Just curious.

Just guessing the prison would be like a prison, not a town.

Just like OZ on HBO. Its good for tv, not for real life.

IMO, it's a mistake to think that Mexican prisons are anything like American Penal Country Clubs.

Absolutely, but locked down, yeah. Fridges with frappachinos and sodas in it? I dunno.

either way, its a guess. Maybe I threw a dart at my "maybe" vs "doubt it" board.

Their cops on the street are so crazy corrupt, their prison guards and wardens must be running their own little kingdoms. These guys want to make a ton of money off their charges, so why not give them a little "freedom" within those prison walls so they can line their pockets with drug payoffs?

Interesting article on "El Pueblito", a prison outside Tijuana.

http://articles.latimes.com/2000/jun/18/news/mn-42142

Talks about how there are Restaurants and juice stands in alleyways and that prisoners frequently get security locks for where they are living on their own. Crazy stuff.

Decent film. It seemed a little over the top, but it made for good story telling.

Yeah, just a notch below Denzel in playing a gritty violent character role.

Supposedly they spoke with a number of ex-inmates to get their first-hand experiences in the prison.
