The Padres gave up next to nothing to get one of the best hitters in baseball. Why didn't the braindead Diamondbacks put something similar together to get him? Wouldn't Brian Giles look really sweet in the middle of this lineup? Giles is signed through 2005, and the Diamondbacks will still be hunting a rightfielder come next spring. A long time black hole would have become the strength of the team. No way Mondesi comes back and Terrero or Devore or Bautista are not the answer next year. If I was Joe jr I would have camped on the Pirates door step until Giles was a Diamondback. To see what the Padres gave up really pisses me off!

I meant before the trade deadline. Everybody and their mother knew Giles was available. The Diamondbacks were to cheap to pay his salary.

The operative word for the next few seasons will be "cheap" when it comes to D'Backs payroll - at least that is how the front office seems to be functioning right now; when some of the huge deferments are paid off, then maybe they will take on more salary.

Giles has a full no trade clause.

Interestingly there were about 6 teams on his list including the D-Backs. He's a San Diego guy and wanted to go home. Arizona would have been close enough.

But.........D-Backs are cutting salary, in case nobody noticed. Wasn't going to happen, no way, no how.

But I'm surprised that the Pirates didn't try to play off the Dodgers or Gnats who might be willing to spend.

Before the dead-line would have required a team to take Kendal as well, and the Diamondbacks are in no situation to pick up a contract like that....even if it meant getting Giles.
