Anyone ever heard of this program? Anyone ever actually use it? Is it ok? Does it suck? Any input is appreciated!

Photo editing software is free

Let's say you have a perfectly fine computer and you'd like some full-featured software to try your hand at photo editing—but your pockets are empty.

There's no need to spend hundreds of dollars for Photoshop when you can get The GIMP for free.

The GIMP—which stands for GNU Image Manipulation Program—is ready for download and available for a wide variety of computer systems including Windows and Mac OS X.

What can you do with it? What can't you do with it!

It is functionally on par with commercial image manipulation software I've used, and there are good tutorials available online for newcomers and experienced computer users. Books have also been published for those who want to dive even deeper into The GIMP.

The interface can take a bit of getting used to. The GIMP uses a series of floating windows—one for the tools, one to organize layers and channels and a third for the image itself. But even without consulting a help file, you should find yourself creating some simple images and being amused by the array of "Script-Fu" commands that add creative touches.

Because this is free software, you may run into some problems. I was puzzled that while The GIMP would open up photos that we get from our wire service, it choked when I tried to open vacation pictures taken with my digital camera in the same JPEG format.

There's no 800 number to call, so I consulted the published bug lists for The Gimp. In short order, I found that others had reported the same problem using a highly organized system.

In Comment #40 (out of 79 posted items) I found the answer, contributed by a user named Casey who used an idea he got from Dan in an earlier posting.

The solution involved downloading a "library" file to replace one in the original installation, and while it was not difficult, there is no one to hold your hand along the way.

If you feel competent in resolving problems like this, give The GIMP a try. Even if you already have a primary picture-manipulation tool, this one could help you see your images in a new way.

I've been using photoshop since 94, so its hard for me to switch up. If I had to pay for photoshop instead of getting it through work that might make me rethink my position though. :)
