The Pats roster is garbage which is why they lost. Best job by a coach and QB that I have ever seen re. Belichick and Brady. They got the most out of a terrible roster.

You make a good point. I'm not sure where they ended the year ranked on defense but their defense was terrible and they most certainly didn't have a running game. I don't believe they had a special return man that made any difference. Essentially out of the three phases of football they had one. It reminds me of the year we went to the Super Bowl.

Don't know how he does it. They should rename it from the Lombardi Trophy to the Belichick Trophy.

In the upcoming draft he managed to get 2 late 1st rounders, where there is tremendous value. 2 picks at the top of the 2nd round. So they get #27, #31, #48 and #63. Why do I get the feeling they will parlay those into immediate help? Because they always seem to do just that. Also believe they will snag a free agent or 2. They are also sitting on Ryan Mallett from last year. Other franchises should be embarassed.

Think about the players who play major roles for the Patriots that might not even make other rosters.

I am not convinced it is a terrible roster, but maybe it is just one that works for them better than it would for most. Has to help that the owner is one of the few sane ones around.

Since Belechick took over in 2001.
division championship every year except 2002 and 2008
3 Super Bowl wins
2 Super Bowl losses

Well, blame the genius who runs their draft and keeps dropping down to pick up picks that add up to nothing. ;)

Yeah, who is the GM there? I would have to say that Belichick has proven himself better at cooking the dinner rather than buying the groceries.

Seriously though, the roster is much worse than you would think would be to make the Super Bowl. I would expect to see a bunch of movement by the Pats this offseason as I feel that both Belichick and Brady know that the clock is ticking and they just missed a golden opportunity this year.

and their offensive weapons consisted of a slot wide receiver and two TEs. They did not have one player maker on the outside at WR. In fact the talent was so bad they used a TE outside the numbers to make plays. Same with their deep threat.

The Patriots suffer from what almost every team (except the Giants) suffer from... lack of pass rush.

and a lack of CB's

and a lack of S's

and a lack or WR's outside

and a lack of DE/DT not name Vince Wilfork

and a lack of RB's that would be starters on half the NFL rosters

But they do have Brady, Welker, Gronk, Hernandez, Mankins, Wilfork and Mayo.

eh. Their offense, even with obvious flaws is a top 2 or 3 offense in this league.

You put a pass rush on that team and the secondary looks a ton better. Look no further than the Giants for proof of this. Weren't they down to about their 5th string CB?

Yeah... I just luv how every year at the draft they laud Belichick and all his moves, and then he spends the offseason buying guys on their last legs to fill holes. Not sure whether the number is 5 or 8, but that is how many Pats from their last SB appearance were on the roster Sunday.

Belichick does a great job manipulating the draft, but as you say, he has struggled with finding impact players with as many picks as he acquires. I also think that is a bit created by Belichick's ever changing defensive scheme. It is just so hard for young players to pick up that the Pats fall into the trap of depending on veteran cast offs who are experienced, but also limited physically.

At one point the Giants were, but not for the playoffs. The Giants also had a much better S tandem.

Look, what the Pats did this year was incredible, but it doesn't make their roster any more talented than it actually is. Welker and Branch were their top 2 WR's and Welker can't line up consistently outside or he is much more ineffective. Their next two offensive weapons were TE's. They have a totally average RB corp, and even their offensive line is made up of scrap heap players other than Logan Mankins. They beat 2 teams with winning records all year, including the playoffs. Their top 2 or 3 offense sputtered against the Ravens and the Giants because eventually it comes down to talent vs talent, and the Pats couldn't scheme well enough to overcome that lack of talent.

Also keep in mind that the Pats were in the Super Bowl because of a missed chip shot field goal.
