Glendale approves Jobing.com lease deal with prospective Phoenix Coyotes buyer Greg Jamison

The Glendale City Council approved a controversial arena management fee this afternoon for prospective Phoenix Coyotes buyer Greg Jamison. It will cost the city roughly $300 million over 20 years to hand over the management of Jobing.com Arena.

The Glendale council voted 4-2 in favor of the deal, which pays Jamison’s investment group about $15 million annually to run city-owned Jobing.com Arena.

I only casually follow the Coyotes but I have been rooting for them to find a buyer and stay in Glendale. It's good for the community, sports and business to have four major franchises in the Valley. I'd hate to see the community go backwards. Sometimes one has to look at the overall picture.

But if the requisite signatures are provided and vetted, they have to wait until a referendum vote in November, right? Terrible time of year (free-agency) for this remaining uncertainty!

Looks like the referendum may be short of signatures .... Glendale is basing the requirement on the 2008 mayoral election ... the organizers state the 2010 election should work

However, looking at the statute I don't see how it could be anything other than 2008

ARS 19-142

A. The whole number of votes cast at the citywide or townwide election at which a mayor or councilmen were chosen last preceding the submission of the application for a referendum petition against an ordinance, franchise or resolution shall be the basis on which the number of electors of the city or town required to file a referendum petition shall be computed. For the purposes of this section, a citywide or townwide election is an election at which all of the qualified electors of a city or town are eligible to vote for a mayor or members of the city or town council. The petition shall be filed with the city or town clerk within thirty days after passage of the ordinance, resolution or franchise.

In 2010 the only council elections were two runoffs that were district specific - I don't see how you could argue that they were open to the all the qualified electors of Glendale.

That would push it back to the 2008 mayoral election, IMO

IMO GWI is being used for a smoke screen to cover up the fact that Jamison can't secure investors, as they know a hockey team can't make money in this market and Glendale is on the road to bankruptcy because of p-poor management. All barriers removed...where's Jamison?

Convert Jobing to an indoor parking garage and call it a day.
