Glendale schedules meeting to explore possible termination of Coyotes lease agreement

http://prohockeytalk.nbcsports.com/...sible-termination-of-coyotes-lease-agreement/

The City of Glendale has scheduled a meeting for Wednesday at 9:00 p.m. ET to discuss the possibility of terminating their current lease agreement with the Arizona Coyotes.

Nick Wood, of the Law Firm Snell & Wilmer has issued the following statement on the behalf of the Coyotes:

“This is a blatant attempt to renege on a valid contract that was negotiated fairly and in good faith and in compliance with all laws and procedures. In the event the City Council initiates any action to revoke, repeal or otherwise rescind the agreement, the Coyotes will immediately take all actions available to them under the law against the City of Glendale.”

Coyotes Co-owner, President and CEO Anthony LeBlanc added, “This action by the City of Glendale is completely ludicrous, especially in light of the fact that myself and Andrew Barroway visited with the City yesterday and the particulars of this were never raised. In fact, we to this moment have not been advised of this other than the notification on the City website. The City of Glendale is displaying a complete lack of good faith, business acumen or an understanding of a business partnership. We want to reassure our great fans that the Arizona Coyotes are committed to Glendale and playing at Gila River Arena.”

Rumor is Paul Allen is becoming open to the idea of the Trailblazers sharing the arena with an NHL team up here in Portland. They currently partially share it with the Winterhawks, a minor league team. It is already configured for both basketball and hockey and is a great arena. Glendale better not screw it up, there are a couple of cities ready to pounce.

Maybe the new arena downtown can be multipurpose.

Summer isn't really the best time to be a Coyotes fan.

If there were any plans by the new ownership of really making a go of it in AZ and not invoking the out-clause in year 5, they just evaporated.

Wow. I'd been looking at the thread title for a few days and assumed this was about the Coyotes wanting to get out of the lease because of lousy attendance. I can't imagine why Glendale would want to throw them out

Come to Vegas coyotes!

You might get your wish.

Have no idea why Arizona politicians hate sports so much. Wouldn't be shocked if we lose the Cards as well.

The Cards aren't going anywhere. If Glendale ever pulled this kind of BS with the Cards (and I wouldn't put it past them), Phoenix and Scottsdale would be THROWING money at the Cards to build them a stadium.

Could you imagine a new Cardinals stadium by Talking stick!! Not having to drive to BFE G-dale to see a game AND having somewhere like talking stick to pre-post game!

Coyotes need to leave Glendale, one way or the other. Going through this every summer is getting aggravating.

Glendale was ALWAYS a poor choice for the Coyotes. Having to fill a venue as many times per season as they do at its current location made it a terrible idea.

I myself am not a Coyotes fan, pretty much based on their location. And its going to sound stupid, but just the idea of having to make the trek to West Phoenix may as well have put them in another state.

And just hearing about this terrible relationship between Glendale and the Coyotes as turned me sour.

Gambo earlier yesterday entertained the idea of the suns/coyotes multipurpose arena. THAT itself perked me up. Moving the Coyotes to Phoenix again just tickled me a little. The Suns are looking to upgrade AWA (yes that is what it will always be), and the idea of a joint venture in a new facility renews interest in the Coyotes.

I have no idea what Glendale has planned for Jobing.com. And the ONLY reason i give even a couple of cares is because the Cardinals reside next door. Otherwise i couldnt care less if that plaza rots. I dislike Glendale THAT much.

This is just more chickens coming home to roost. I understand the new ownership finding this "ludicrous" but they are just the newest iteration of a ludicrous history until proven otherwise.

I think ColorWerx is right: Quebec is almost ready to physically host an immediate arrival. Even though the Canadian dollar is down a bit compared to a couple years ago, the Canadian TV contract is the bedrock of the league right now. Plus, a number of other cities (as others have noted) are on equal or better footing to build a new arena. One factor in the Valley's favor re: Quebec is that in the current alignment, a move to the eastern conference would mean an eastern team would have to move back. Detroit isn't going to, so Columbus seems to be the only real candidate (despite being east of Detroit).

We'll see... But this thing remains a circus.

Glendale City Council votes to cancel arena lease with IceArizona, Coyotes

http://www.abc15.com//sports/sports...-icearizona-coyotes?audiencePageId=1131396726

The Glendale City Council voted 5-2 Wednesday to cancel its 15-year, $225 million arena lease agreement with IceArizona, which co-owns the Arizona Coyotes.

The city council's vote was based on an Arizona statute that allows an agency to cancel a contract when an employee who was highly involved with the agreement becomes an agent or employee of the contract's other party. Craig Tindall has served as general counsel to the Coyotes since 2013 after stepping down from his role as Glendale city attorney after the lease was approved.

"We are disappointed with the city's decision to violate its obligations under the agreement that was entered into and duly approved only two years ago," Coyotes co-owner, president and CEO Anthony LeBlanc said in a statement after the vote.

"We will exhaust any and all legal remedies against the city of Glendale for this blatant violation of its contractual obligations to us."

Glendale Mayor Jerry Weiers, Vice Mayor Ian Hugh and Councilmembers Lauren Tolmachoff, Bart Turner and Jamie Aldama voted in favor of canceling the lease.

Councilmembers Gary Sherwood and Sammy Chavira were the lone dissenting votes.

"With all due respect, this is not how you conduct business in the real world," LeBlanc said during Wednesday's meeting, adding the city is engaging in "strong-arm tactics" to force IceArizona to renegotiate the lease.

Instead of the three amigos, we have the five morons!

How about coming back to USAC for a few seasons - yeah I know the issues there - and get a Suns/Yotes multi-purp arena built. Although that's probably at least 5yrs down the road.

People who don't think Westgate will become a ghost town are nuts. I've been to that place during the day, at night and for Yotes games and it's already a ghost town during non event times.

I'm sure Councilman Hugh has someone waiting in the wings to provide more than 41 dates of 12,000 plus to fill the arena and provide for the tenants of Westgate.

You know, it's not like there is any competition for those extremely common and frequent type of events in the valley.

Can the council really be this stupid? Or, do they actually have a strategy/plan that A.) They know they would be successful in forcing a renegotiation with the Coyotes, or B.) They actually believe they would be able generate activity/use equal, if not greater than what the Coyotes would generate?

After all of the immense stupidity demonstrated in AZ politics over the years, I guess I shouldn't be all that surprised by what Glendale has done here... yet, I am... :bang:

A. This is pretty much the nuclear option

B. I don't see how.

Frankly, even I understand that the deal they signed wasn't great. It should have had performance clauses and probably should have been a smaller fee for arena management. However, Glendale built a hockey stadium and the perfect storm of recession (which slowed Westgate's growth and ate up disposable incomes), Moyes bankruptcy, and poor hockey management put the franchise and Glendale under the eight ball. The high price was required if they wanted to weather the storm and keep their anchor tenant along with the vision of making Glendale a sports destination.

Now here we are as things are slowly trending up and this new council just wants to exploit a loophole and make political hay.

It doesn't really make Glendale look like a professional outfit that's ready to be a sports mecca. Good luck going toe to toe with the NHL's legal team.

Yea... I honestly don't know how the city is making out on the current deal. When you add in everything/total economic value, I have to believe it's more positive than negative for the city of Glendale. It is beyond stupid, low-class and irresponsible for them to make this move not even 3 years into the deal...
I REALLY hope the team is able to find a way to locate in downtown Phoenix!
