NHL deputy commissioner: Glendale's move was as bush league as I've seen

http://arizonasports.com/43/1842515/NHL-deputy-commish-Glendale-canceling-Coyotes-lease-bush-league

This past week has taken Arizona citizens and fans of the Arizona Coyotes on a rollercoaster of emotions and now has the league speaking out.

"That was about as big a bush league move as I have ever seen," said NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly, a guest on Doug and Wolf on Arizona Sports 98.7 FM on Monday.

Daly feels the situation between Glendale and the Coyotes is "very, very unfortunate."

"A fanbase and a franchise that has been through a lot," said Daly. "They deserve better than what they are getting right now and when a city council puts, really by all accounts, a surprise attack where they put termination of a valid and binding lease on a city council agenda the night before they vote on it and then they go ahead and vote on it to happen. It really is unfortunate for the best term."

Coyotes need to leave Glendale, one way or the other. Going through this every summer is getting aggravating.
Exactly how I feel.

I feel terrible for true Coyotes fans. I'm a casual hockey fan at best so I would never put myself in that group, but there are some very passionate Coyotes fans in this state, and for them I feel bad. Us Cards fans had to live under the fear of the team leaving for a decade and it wasn't a good feeling.

But man is this getting old. The Coyotes and their fans deserve better, and they should go find it. We've done this every summer for like what, 5 years now?

The city council is a bunch of morons, but the real problem here is the mayor. He is a total moron and his EGO is the source of so much of this nonsense.

Here is an exerpt from a recent Seattle Times article:

"It’s worth noting Glendale Mayor Jerry Weiers, who’d opposed the deal in 2013, is expected to seek re-election next year and seems to be staking his claim as a guy who stands up to big sports.

Weiers infuriated the NFL before the recent Super Bowl by not pushing Glendale hotels to reduce rates. The NFL promptly relocated many Super Bowl events to neighboring communities, leaving Weiers complaining about Glendale’s huge game expenses and minimal gains.
But Weiers, his town verging on bankruptcy, can now tell voters he stood up to two major sports leagues."

Politicians in a nutshell. You help create a problem, then you blame the problem on someone else and use it as your next re election platform.

Those stadiums have done nothing but great things for Glendale. Can it even be measured how much money the Cards and Coyotes moving there has brought in?

The city council made a terrible deal in 2013, it's not working out, and now they want a do-over. The mayor is a bumbling idiot who has no substance and all rhetoric and he is willing to drag Arizona and Glendale through the mud to score himself a few political points with idiots who can be pandered to with this kind of nonsense.

Without them there is no Cabelas out there, no Westmark, no outlets, no restaurants and no tourism dollars. This is insane. Like I said, at this point the power hungry council people EGOS have let this devolve into a war of attrition and the Coyotes are going to be the casualties. All those people coming out there spending money. It's not just about charging rent. Think of all the sales tax, the donations the teams have done to the rescue services, the traffic tickets alone from the millions of people in and out of the area should be helping the Police, yet the city and all the emergency services in Glendale are in worse financial shape than they were 10 years ago. That is mind boggling mismanagement.

The Council is pressing ahead, trying to go back on the deal. They say they still want the Coyotes to play in Glendale, they just want a new, mutually-beneficial deal.

Here's the thing, though. Contracts MUST be negotiated in GOOD FAITH. How can that occur now? The city is basically saying, "Sign a better contract or get out of town." That is the opposite of good faith because there is an implied threat. And it is also pretty hard to negotiate in good faith with a party that has recently reneged on a contract, especially without giving any notice to the other party before they made their intentions public.

Sounds like a good time for some recall elections, if possible

Coyotes vote spurs Glendale council recall push

http://www.azcentral.com/story/news...-spurs-glendale-council-recall-push/28795287/

Four Glendale City Council members who voted last week to rescind the city's $225 million agreement with the Arizona Coyotes are being targeted for recall.

Glendale real-estate agent Larry Feiner on Monday requested documents to begin recall efforts against Vice Mayor Ian Hugh and City Council members Jamie Aldama, Lauren Tolmachoff and Bart Turner. All four voted last week with Mayor Jerry Weiers to terminate the Coyotes' lease and management contract for Gila River Arena.

Weiers is not being targeted because it would require roughly 18,000 signatures on petitions to recall the mayor, while it takes only about 1,000 signatures for each of the council members, Feiner said.

"The council members are acting so irresponsibly with trying to hardball the team into renegotiating a 15-year deal that is not even 2 years old," Feiner said. "My city is going to be irreparably harmed by the horrible decision to cancel the contract."

The recall effort is the latest fallout from the 5-2 vote Wednesday to instruct the city attorney and city manager to cancel the Coyotes agreement.

The stupidity of this council over the last year or so has been epic; not just with the Coyotes.

My not so evil wish...

The Coyotes win the lawsuit and the CoG is forced to abide by the lease agreement.
The Coyote play out the next 3yrs in Glendale
A new NBA/NHL arena starts getting built in the next 3-5yrs
When said new arena is ready the Coyotes give the CoG the middle finger and move to the new arena.

And, I can get season tix again :) Haven't had them since they moved out of AWA

This!

It would be high comedy if the team won the lawsuit, got damages and used that money to help fund a new arena in a different part of town.

Getting uglier.

Glendale wants to skip a $3.75 million payment to the Arizona Coyotes as part of its effort to terminate its agreement with the team.

Cynthia Ricketts, a private attorney hired by the city to represent Glendale, filed a motion in Maricopa County Superior Court on Wednesday asking Judge Dawn Bergin to allow Glendale to either withhold the fourth-quarter payment to the Coyotes or deposit the $3.75 million into an escrow account.

That leads to an interesting issue. There are quite a few events happening in August. If there is no payment made, what happens to those events? Who runs them and how much does it cost to run them. If the City of Glendale has to run them, how much money does it cost to put together a company big enough to handle it? In the end, will it cost them more? Also, what dates cover the 4th quarter since there were two event over the last week.
