Nevermind - Pats resigned him last week for less than 1/2 of what we are paying Levi Brown....what a joke
According to a league source, the contract’s base value is $17 million, of which $8.5 million is guaranteed.

The truly elite “franchise” left tackles don’t hit the open market, that’s why you’re not seeing Ryan Clady on this list. However, Vollmer leads a class of free agent tackles who are in the class of ‘very good’ and, more is the point, excellent value for money in a position that will not directly win you football games.

In his four-year tenure in New England, Vollmer has experience at both left tackle (five starts in 2009, +17.5 grade) and right tackle, and has excelled at both positions. The talk of the town in the AFC East was what the arrival of Mario Williams would do to the division’s tackles. Well, Vollmer didn’t allow a single pressure to Williams in the one game that he faced him this season (with Williams deployed primarily on the right side in the return encounter).

A tremendously consistent performer on both sides of the line, Vollmer has only four single-game grades of -3.0 or worse in his four years with the Patriots. If you look at offensive tackle as a mistake-driven position, then Vollmer is an extremely safe pair of hands. In fact, his only letdown performance this season came against Cameron Wake when he was playing with a bad back.

Mods you can alter the title if you so please

Was there some insider info we didn't know about? Why wasn't this guy at least brought in? With credentials like that it makes it a head scratcher. Was it the money he wanted? Could we afford him? The article binkar linked said he wanted to remain in New England, maybe he was holding out to get an offer from them?

We were in a wrong-offseason, wrong-cap situation spot this year with our offensive line. There was already so much pumped into Snyder, Colledge, and Brown that we couldn't afford to go for someone like Vollmer or Jake Long. Plus, we'd have been stunting the development of Massie, who likely deserves another year at RT, but is unfortunately one of our least flexible linemen.

If we're going to replace Brown soon, I'd rather do it with a great rookie, anyways. A cohesive, young OL is what this franchise needs (along with a great QB).
