Basically an updated origin story.

Godzillas death ray causing a nuclear explosion when it hit was an interesting touch I thought.
It fit in with the time period.. as did the occasional comments regarding the U.S. loaning them old ships or "allowing " them to use their own... a touch of authenticity that added complexity but may have ruffled feathers back when the original was made
