Yep. Just a ridiculous premise. Even dumber of the director to think an audience would be so brain dead as to believe it.

Yep...eye of the beholder type thing. Because we couldn't believe how messed up the situation ended which we liked.

I don't get wrapped up in how unbelievable a movie is. 99% of all movies have premises or plot holes so utterly ridiculous or unrealistic that if I got hung up on them...I wouldn't be a movie fan.

It's all about willing suspension of disbelief, and how well the director/writer/actors court the audience to do so. In this case, it was just, 'yeah, we're not even going to try--we know it's ridiculously stupid'.

As you say, all movies require a certain degree of suspension of disbelief. IMO, Gone Girl went 1,000 miles beyond any reasonable degree.

4 of us went together to see this film, and even though we guessed fairly early on what was happening, we were into it and really enjoying it (especially the very obvious and well deserved pokes at Nancy Grace). A few plot holes? Sure.... but nothing horrid. And then it ended and it just ruined the whole experience. There are several ways they could have gone with the ending, but the one they chose was simply the worst. Look.... a movie ending doesn't have to have an ending with sparkle ponies and unicorns that poop neapolitan ice cream. But this ending was so dismal, unbelievable and dumb that it just took away from the whole experience and left us feeling angry. Mostly because of the ending, we gave it 3 out of 5 stars.

I agree. The writer/director had no choice but to follow it.

Why would you change it? It's like The Natural. Sure the ending was a classic in movie history but in the book Hobbs strikes out. I think that would have been equally as classic.

I loved it. One of the best movies I've seen in a few years IMO. The girlfriend HATED it.

Going to see it tonight. The reviews are really solid for this one. It is apparently the last Fincher movie we will get for a while. He is going to direct the entire first season of the HBS series "Utopia" (not to be confused with the FOX show of the same name).

I am really excited about this one.

People who say he needs to tighten his movies/editing are spot on. There was absolutely no need for a 2 1/2 hour movie here--and I love long movies! Cut fifteen minutes off the beginning half, and fifteen minutes off the opening half, and it would have been solid.

Except for the ending, which was total crap. Of course, you can't blame the filmmakers for that one

No way, you need at least 2.5 hours for a Fincher film.

100% disagree. I mean that scene, the music and everything was as a kid one of the most magical scenes in a movie I had ever seen. Having him strike out would have completely changed that movie for me.

Have to completely disagree. The ending was unconventional and actually is one of the reason the movie had a lasting impact for me and the wife. Anytime an ending leaves you going "wow that's just messed up" and gets you to keep thinking about that it's a good thing IMO. We liked it.

Just saw this one recently - I have to agree. In real life, things are not so black and white. I got the feeling he was afraid of her, afraid for his life and the life of his test tube baby because she was a crazy witch.

Think of movies where the genders are reversed. How many times have you seen women stay with abusive men because they are afraid for themselves and their kids?

Reminded me a bit of the ending in Unfaithful with Diane Ladd. In the end, her husband killed for her, and she forgave him.

I do like movies that make you think, period.
