I completely agree with you on this. Tampa is changing name and uniforms and he can be the face of the organization in his hometown. I think they will grossly over pay for him in order to land him and market around him. It might bring in some interested to their team. They are desperate and he will be the focus of attention like he wants.
As for Zito he is a bad idea and he is going to New York. He isn't coming to az. I think the former A's pitcher we should go after is Mulder because he will come on the cheap. Low risk high reward signing.

Mulder will be cheaper because he is having arm surgery and likely won't be ready to pitch until late next season at the earliest. I agree with you on Zito, though.

Exactly. An Outfield of Eric Byrnes, Carlos Quentin and Chris Young will be stellar.

We need to put our money into getting Barry Zito and another top notch pitcher. (Schmidt? Even though it sounds like he's going to SEA)

What an amazing rotation:
Zito
Webb
Schmidt
Batista
Nippert

Just the thought of that.... Pipedream, I know.

Batista won't be here next year, that's why we brought in Livan Hernandez to replace him as our #3.

The likely scenario is to sign Ted Lilly, and nab Mulder with an incentive laden contract.

After that pick up Carlos Lee and get a couple middle relief pitchers. Can you say NL West Champs?

I haven't heard that he is out all of next year. I have heard that he will pitch next season and will be ready and like i said he will be low risk high reward. Thats what we should look at. One sure fire guy via trade and then some low risk high reward guys in free agency. Livan and Webb are solid you need one more guy that is a definet solid and then fill out the rotation. Don't be shocked if a young bat is trade for a guy like D-train and if so then you add the big bat to the outfield. The big question mark is who will be the power bat. I am starting to like the idea of Soriano as a dback. He can split time between 2nd and OF or strictly be an OF. I would be willing to sacrifice a little bit of defense for his bat and speed. The only problem is with Josh Byrnes philosophy on base stealing that part of his game would be worthless.

What is Josh Byrnes philosophy on base stealing? How can you argue with the success batters had when Womak was leading the league in SB?

If we bring in Lee or Soriano to play the OF, what happens to Upton and Hairston? I suppose we should wait to see if Young and Quentin pan out, and keep the others as insurance. Or perhaps we could package and move them for pitching. Upton used to play SS, I wonder if he could be taught 3B in Tucson? That we would could maybe have someone w/ some defensive skills at the hot corner, and we could move either Jackson or Tracy.

Really? Thats too bad. I love speed guys, you can't teach speed as they say. It helps so much on defense, and it can really help hide the lack of a power hitter.

It think you will see Hairston traded and possibly one other prospect for a top of the line pitcher. From what I hear about Upton he isn't going to be big league ready til next September at the earliest and it will probably be longer than that. I don't think you will see Upton moved from the outfield. His athletic ability and speed suit him perfectly to play there.
