I've been away for a long time. Close to 7 years now, but am coming back for the game on Saturday when they retire Gonzo's number. I heard a rumor that the Dbacks might wear their old uniforms that day too. Any truth to that? Looking forward to going back to the BOB or the Chase or whatever they call it these days. Should be a good night with a lot of memories from 2001.

Great to see you back on this board. The old private site is no longer. I used to post under the name Zona90. Are you still in the military nando?

Welcome back, aznando !!

It'd be awesome if they wore their original colors. Wish they had never changed...

I like Gonzo a lot but I don't think the Diamondbacks should be retiring his number. I believe the only guy worthy of having his number retired so far is Randy.

By the way, here is a graph of Gonzo's homers throughout his career. I know there are many who don't think he juiced but I'm not one of them.

I agree with you, I think RJ should probably have got it retired first, but I guess it's more of a what he's done for the community thing and the fact he works for the organization. Gonzo has always been the golden child and somehow avoided the Steroid/HGH plague.

Y'know, this line of thinking defines the D'backs problems, from the previous coaching staffs right through most of our announcers. Jeff Munn is the only exception.

Home runs is not what it is all about.

How about Gonzo's

3 D'backs team MVP awards
3 D'backs Good Guy awards
5 All star appearances
2.591 career hits
20th MLB player with 500 doubles as well as 300 HR's
Winner of an All Star HR derby
Branch Rickey award for exceptional community service

And the two biggest factors . . .

5 consecutive 100 RBI seasons with the D'backs
And the biggest hit in our history, bloop or otherwise

It's a lot more than just homeruns.

If our two previous managers had realized that, we might not be in the position we are in.

In a local interview the other day he said this was his biggest regret - finishing with 596 doubles.

He said he should have "pulled the chute" a few more times and stopped at 2nd instead of taking 3rd. LOL

With the round robin rotation we have in LF, maybe Gonzo could come back for four more doubles. :)

Come on guys, with all the issues we've had in recent years, please give it a rest with Gonzo. All the accomplishments BC listed, what he meant to the community, and the hit...it still gives me goosebumps watching that ninth inning and the part of the ceremony I was able to catch on TV was great. There is no debate to me who the best player was. Randy was the best and he will be the first Diamondback in the Hall of Fame. He is my favorite DBack of all time. However, I feel Gonzalez deserves this. I have no problem with him being the first with his number retired.

Also, I have to say that even with how much I love that whole '01 team, people who dropped the team shortly after drive me crazy...It'll just make me enjoy it all that much more when we're winning again. With all our struggles, I still love this group.

It's possible that the talk about RJ going into the HOF as a Seattle Mariner played a factor in his not having his number retired yet as a D'back.

I know the Hall decides, but Randy has made it clear that he wants it to be as a Mariner.

Statistics wise, Randy certainly should have been the first. Reaching out to the fans, no.

Wait, Randy wants to be in as a Mariner? Why? That's wird I haven't heard about that.

This bullpen really does make me reconsider what I just said though. Every time.

Team management made the decision according to Luis. He said he would have completely understood if Randy had the honor first and said he would have gladly gone in second if they changed their minds...

I stand corrected. The HOF committee makes the decision which cap a player wears into the Hall. I read some time ago that they were leaning toward the Mariners, because that is where he spent more seasons and had more wins and strikeouts.

But all the articles I've googled tonight indicate that the D'backs have the advantage. The perfect game. The World Series victory. Living in Phoenix now.

That's good to see.

Great game, Padres hit a couple to tie it in the ninth. I saw the Padres weren't bringing in Bell and I told my wife, watch C.Y is going to take the first pitch he sees deep to end this. Wasn't the first pitch but he did end it. Exciting and I had great seats too! Great day to be back among 48K of my closest friends, lots of nostalgia and a great ending.

Alright, you had me thinking my favorite player was saying he didn't want to be in the HOF as a DBack. Players have made some comments about us in the past; don't want Randy to be one of those.

Randy has to go into the Hall as a DBack - 4 of his Cy Young's came here in Phoenix.

BTW, does anyone remember the talk of a 'enhanced baseball' during the 2001 season? It seems with all of the steroid allegations, this was forgotten. I remember Curt Schilling and many others saying the ball was juiced, it was softer, etc. IF that were true, I think it helps exonerate Gonzo of the needle. Because, he really one had ONE season of high numbers, if he had juiced wouldn't it seem logical that he would have juiced for more than just one season?
