I just spent 20 minutes on Netflix trying to find something I've never seen before that looks good, and couldn't find much. I thought I'd ask the board--any suggestions? Movies that are outside the mainstream--so you probably wouldn't find them in the rather mainstream "cult favorites" section at Blockbuster--but good movies nonetheless.

My list would include Sweet and Low Down and In the Company of Men, and The Coca-Cola Kid is a pretty good movie, too.

Are you looking for newer movies, or are you willing to watch some oldies?

Any and all, but I usually like older movies better. My favorite are of the Serpico/Mean Streets/Bullitt variety.

The Straight Story is a great movie, but I haven't seen many of the others. I'll add a few to the queue--thanks for the tips . . .

Here's a couple that come to mind based on the ones you mentioned. They're not too obscure though, so you might have already see them.

The Day of the Jackal (1973 version)
High Plains Drifter

I loved that one. I've got a ton of suggestions if you want some foreign movies.

I have been really digging the asian film market that last 10 years or so. Not just China or Japan either, Korea and Thialand have been making some pretty good flicks as well. Not everyones cup of tea but their Horror, Action, and Drama movies have been really good IMO. Especially the Horrors are way, way better then the current state of affairs of the horrid Horror movie genre in America.
