I've been watching TV series more and more lately, but one really good modern-day film noir style movie I saw recently was Brick. Excellent film, and a bit of a throwback to the old days with a modern twist.

I think I had to turn the subtitles on for that one. I couldn't understand what the heck they were saying. Really good movie though.

I don't know how obscure this is, but Dog Day Afternoon is one of my favorite movies, and doesn't get the credit it should. Also--

Big Night
The Third Man

And a few documentaries--

American Movie
Paradise Lost
The Thin Blue Line

In a van...down by the river.
Great thread.

"Below" ------(WWII ghost story) written & directed by David Twohy,co-written by Darren Aronofsky.
"Feeling Minnesota" --------bizarre comedy/drama.
"K-PAX"---------very bad choice of a movie title for a very good movie IMO.

Some comments:

Run Lola Run: This German indy is really an existentialist action film. It's a chick flick for dudes! Deals with Chaos Theory, Nietzsche, soccer theory, and more. Very fun, but probably best known for the techno sound track that will seriously thump your sub-woofer.

American Movie: Probably the best two hours I've ever spent with stoners. Never could decide if I was laughing at them or with them.

Barton Fink: Most hated Coen Bros. movie, probably because it's one long metaphor for pre-WWII Europe. If you know the metaphor going in, it's pretty freakin' powerful. The acting performances are gripping.

The Machinist: Pretty disturbing when you realize Christian Bale starved himself for the role. Almost felt Bale should've been committed by the end of the movie for what he did to himself. Very interesting movie.

Surprised no one mentioned The Following. Also, if you're looking for disturbing, it doesn't get more disturbing -- in a very real, non-gory way -- than Happiness.

I have been really digging the asian film market that last 10 years or so. Not just China or Japan either, Korea and Thialand have been making some pretty good flicks as well. Not everyones cup of tea but their Horror, Action, and Drama movies have been really good IMO. Especially the Horrors are way, way better then the current state of affairs of the horrid Horror movie genre in America.

I totally agree. Someone mentionend Battle Royale which I think is pretty crazy and definitely worth checking out. Infernal Affairs is really good too. The sequels are alright but the first one is awesome.

I just watched Night Watch and Day Watch and really enjoyed those two as well.
