I just read about this on CNET. Google doesn't have a link to it from their front page yet.
Pretty cool. Very fast. Mapquest somehow seems so inadequate now, and it is much faster than Mapquest without all the advertising.

Was this thread about just the maps or the satellite view option?

You can view an address from above now...click on the satellite link at the top right corner of the page.

It was originally just about the maps, but I saw where they added the satellite, too.

It has a really cool feature that lets you drag around the map to pull in what is offscreen.

No, it is not dissimilar...I think. :D

It's free, though and pretty cool, IMO.

Google maps is awsome! Already used it to chart a 20 mile trip through Portland. I also checked out my childhood house on Ray/Rural. That freeway wasn't there when I lived there.

Only thing that sucks is that the full zoom on the satelite isnt available worldwide! (although you can still zoom in a bit to see some of the world wonders!

I know the satellite views are available from other places as well but I think they should disable this feature... Being the director of safety for a large company dealing with very hazardous substances it really worries me that any Joe Schmoe can go on here and pull up on of our locations and find out where and how to access our locations storage facilities... Even with the fairly high altitude pictures it shows far too much information... You can't really pin down certain things on say, a house, like where the Natural Gas connection is, but on a large business it shows WAY too much info...

I zoomed right in on a nuclear power plant the other day. I didn't know what I was looking at but the detail made me think the same thing.

Well, you know you have get directions from one place to another? I want to be able to put more than just those two addresses on one map. I think I can figure it out, though.

Anyone downloaded Google Earth yet?

Yes, it is free. There were too many people downloading it from the Google site, so it wasn't available, but I got it from cnet.com. Try it - it is amazing!
