In a van...down by the river.
Kyle Lowry is out with an injury and Goran has stepped in the starting lineup the last two games. The results?

Home gm vs the LA Clipps (win)
38 minutes
14 points
7 assists
10 rebounds(3 offensive)
1 steal
2 blocks
38% FG
2 of 5 from 3pt range

Home gm vs the Mavs (OT loss)
15 points
7 assists
10 rebounds(4 offensive)
4 steals
37% FG
2 of 6 from 3pt range

My point? Good all around numbers i'd say...the kind of numbers a backup PG playing in Nashball isn't going to produce, and shouldn't be expected to produce even if he starts.

Goran had no chance in PHX's offense,an occasional blip of production here and there.
But we got Aaron Brooks now....who fits the mold. Nice, but what happens when the "mold" is gone next season?

Just sayin. Didn't like the trade then, and i still dont. Brooks is a backup one dimensional scrub of a PG.

I think the Suns intentions were in the right place with that trade(trying to get a high energy backup for Nash) but what happens now?
Dragic is IMO the better basketball player(over Brooks) moving forward....especially on a team that's likely going to have to run a more traditional offense in the near future due to Nash's questionable future here.

Its only 2 gm's as the starter for Dragic,so maybe its a fluke.....we'll see.

Right on the nose. If Nash can't play a team leading 33.3 (even higher than his career average of 31.3) minutes per game, every game from start to finish, at peak production -- which he no longer can -- no backup Point Guard can run his system and it hurts the team.

Sentimentally, I'd like to see him finish his career here. But his age and his 178 pound frame lead to . . . well, we've seen what it leads to. Under .500 and playoff elimination.

If Steve is not traded during the off-season, we'll know what to expect a year from now. That's a bleak prospect.

Does it really matter?

If we extend Brooks this trade gets even worse for us. If we don't extend him nobody will trade us anything for him because nobody else wants to overpay Brooks for more than the MLE either.

Brooks signing for the full MLE with another team is pretty much the best thing that can happen in our case pretty much.

Smart smart trade..

We saw enough of him the year before to know that Dragic has some skills. He filled in well as a starter a few times in Phoenix also. However, 2010 was a different season. It doesn't matter what he once did or what he might once do, he just wasn't doing it for Phoenix this season. I still don't know why his game so completely disappeared but it definitely did. I hope he does well in Houston, I always liked the guy but I still like the Brooks deal.

Brooks is still playing on an injured ankle that is hurting every aspect of his game. I think it is way too early to judge this guy until we see what he can do when healthy. He's not my idea of the perfect starting PG but I think he can be decent in that role and if we can get a more traditional guard in our lineup, Brooks could be a tremendous asset as a 6th man. He has game changing speed and quickness when he's running on two good ankles.

And no defense, questionable character and wants a lot of money.

No thanks. He is no star PG and at the same time he is not a good role player at PG.

You don't want to pay Brooks the full MLE..

You are down on Dragic because of this season? What has Brooks done this season? The Suns should never re-sign this guy. Trade was an incredible failure.

My position has been the Suns shot from the hip on this trade. I liked what I had saw of Brooks prior to the trade but throwing in a first round pick was ridiculous. I don't think Brooks will ever be satisfied being a backup PG and his size limits his ability as a starter. I just hope the Suns do not let him walk for nothing losing both the pick and Dragic. The Suns sorely miss a sharp GM. In the dark recesses of my mind, I wonder if this was a money making process so the Suns do not have to pay Dragic or Brooks or a second first round pick. I know this thinking is not logical but the Suns FO has made me very cynical.

Even if the Brooks thing turns into nothing...the Suns had to try something. Dragic was not working out here. For some reason he regressed to the "dear in the headlights" Dragic of his rookie year.

No matter what the Suns did, get Brooks or hang on to Draigic, they were going to have problems filling in for Nash.

At the end of the day neither Brooks nor Dragic are probably the answer. It's probably just another hole the Suns have to fill. They IMO still need to address SG, PF and PG (if Nash is gone next season).

Eh, Dragic was at least a good defender.

But that obviously wasn't filling the backup role. Great....he was a decent defender but the team fell apart with him on the court. A PG should either be able to score or distribute. He couldn't do either.

And Brooks is just scoring and distributing like Magic Johnson.

triple double tonight

Ouch.

I liked the trade at the time, but that was under the assumption we were going to make the playoffs with Brooks added fire power off the bench. Now.........not so much.

Damn Suns, everything you touch turns to s---.

At least I get to watch the Miami Heat experience in the playoffs up close as a consolation prize. Truth be told I am actually pretty jazzed about the NBA playoffs, even without the Suns.

Maybe the Suns FO score a triple as well. They traded Dragic, may lose Brooks to FA and throw away a first round draft pick.

Its because nobody can run Nashball except Nash. Its not rocket science, but now Nashball is coming to an end...and we've traded a pick and a young PG who can defend and run a more "traditional" NBA offense for Brooks, who does an admirable job running this high energy offense, but i dont see how this helps us moving forward.

Very soon (IMO)we'll be forced to install a more traditional offensive system when Nash is done here. We'll be without Dragic(who is proving he can be what i thought he could be if given the carkeys in a better system) and without a 1st rd pick.....and for what?....a last ditch effort to make the 8th seed in the playoffs?

I'm sorry but thats just dumb.

I'm more concerned with Nash's proclamation that he wants to play a few more years . . . here in Phoenix.

Hey Steve, the Mercury could probably use a good backup Point Guard. :)

^^Exactly. Chris Paul could come to PHX and play Nash's offense but he probably wouldnt too good in it.

No one can.

The system is strictly designed for Nash's strengths & weaknesses.

One of the main reasons we had a bad season is because of the regression of Dragic the Tragic, or LOLopez. I thought both of them would be better than the garbage show they put on the court this year.

But for different reasons, as we know. Dragic, or anyone else, couldn't step in sporadically and run Nash's system. Lopez, on the other hand, was given an opportunity that any bench Center would drool over, and lacked in all aspects but scoring a few early points.

Disagree. Chris Paul could easily step in for Nash. He does what Nash does great which is the pick and roll and getting into the lane.

To take it one step further, Paul can play some damn good defense to boot. Paul is probably one of the few players that could come in here and not miss a beat IMO.

This team lacks talent and youth. When this happens, talented players, play down a bit. I don't know what his off the field stuff is, but I know for a fact he partied a lot, and maybe that had something to do with it. (or allowed him to fly off the handle...alcohol..perhaps drugs..prescription or outright illegal) But I only know he partied with alcohol, so all the rest is just speculation given an unknown situation that sounded very Calvin Pace-y.

But who at his age didn't party down a bit with alcohol and make a few bad choices or fly off the handle a couple of time, just a few. Most get beyond it, and perhaps he already has, again pure speculation. What I do know is we panicked, traded him, and ended up going nowhere. Seeing how old we were, that 1st round pick, might as well be three, given how bad we need young talent here.

But again another bad trade that will come back to haunt us. In today's NBA, you get the stars FIRST, then you sign mediocre players to big contracts (as a piss poor way of doing things). You cannot do it the other way around, unless you're a team trading to the PHX suns, which we cannot do, since that's us.

$arver-ed again

It's like he sees every pick as money first, an asset to trade away a bad contract 2nd, and a player 3rd. Then with those he didn't trade away, he gives up on, because they aren't Michael Jordan by the first couple of years. (did he EVER watch basketball or any sports before buying the Suns?)

Who do we have as a 1st round pick of the Suns, still on the suns (that wasn't traded away at some point). Lopez? Jesus. We had the most 1st round picks of the 2000's, and we only have Lopez? Lucked out on Dudley, but Dudley's are a dime a dozen, so while we got lucky, it was just a wing we got lucky finding, and even then there's much better wing players out there.

Dragic isn't perfect, and may not of even turned out to be 'the guy', but he would of been decent at the very least, and we'd still have a 1st round pick.

Who knows what system we'll run in the future, at this point, $arver should lobby for wheelchairs to be legal on-court during the game. Hey $arver, tell stern you'll even throw in a 1st round pick, since that's all you know how to do...trade away the future for bubble gum and pop "crack" rocks.

If you were Paul, and were getting out of NO for a reason, why would you step into a worse situation in PHX? Out of the frying pan, and into the fryer.

At the end of the day though, I don't fault the Suns for trading Goran. Seriously, it wasn't looking good here. You could make the argument that the team gave up too quickly but when your trying to take a "now" approach, you are either a team who will take risks or sit on their butts praying to the NBA gods it works out.

I don't Goran was going to be the answer here in this system under this coach.

yes, but taking a "now" approach with a team that sucks doesn't make a whole lot of sense.

In all fairness, if Carter could have been half the player JRich was when we traded him and Nash was healthy, I really do feel like this team could have been much better. Not title better but certainly not what we ended up with.
