Samardzija and Hammel from Cubs to A's for three prospects. Samardzija pitched great to start the season but was undermined by lack of run support.

With the Cubs wanting prospects the D'backs shouldn't have been in play.

Thatcher and Campana were traded for a couple of Angel's prospects, RHP Joey Krehbiel and OF Zach Borenstein. Kind of meh all the way around. D'backs save a little over a million in the deal.

This is what it is going to come down to for ARZ, purging Tower's mistakes. Prado, Hill, McCarthy are going to be sold for pennies because of their huge salaries. Ross, will have to be DFA and paid to leave as no one is willing to assume the $$$ left on his deal, unless ARZ is willing to pay most of the balance. Unless ARZ is willing to send cash in deals, the players we get back aren't going to be quality.

Thatcher is a free agent after the season.

The two players the D'backs received in this trade appear to be more minor league roster fillers than potential D'backs.

F grade for this trade. Left handed relievers have value and the D'backs got nothing.

I don't think the Dbacks will get much of anything in any trade. They don't have quality players to get quality players.

And when you make trades like Upton for Prado what should you expect to get for Brandon McCarthy?

Chris Cotillo of MLBDailyDish.com reports that the Yankees have acquired Brandon McCarthy from the Diamondbacks in exchange for Vidal Nuno.
FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal and CBS Sports' Jon Heyman are also saying that the trade is done. ESPN's Buster Olney reports that the D'Backs are also sending cash to the Yankees in the deal. Although he's 3-10 with a 5.01 ERA, McCarthy has upped his velocity this season and boasts a nice 93/20 K/BB ratio. Yankee Stadium obviously isn't an ideal landing spot, but he should be an upgrade over Nuno.

Why on earth is Towers still being allowed to make trades???? He has destroyed the franchise. When is Tony La Russa going to take charge??

Wow, paid the freakin' Yankees to take McCarthy and got a worse player in return. Forgot about drug testing the players, time to have Kevin Towers piss in a cup!

Why make the trade now? They should of waited until they got closer to the deadline because they would of had more teams wanting McCarthy, especially if he continued to pitch the way he had the last few outings. :bang:

Again, all the deals ARZ will be making are to get rid of bad contracts and save money. McCarthy was stilled owed $4.5M for the remainder of the year, I doubt ARZ kicked in that amount so I'm sure they saved some money in the deal.

Hill, Prado & Ross are the last of the big money contracts left. Hill & Prado have generated interest, ARZ will have to kick in money for teams to be interested but the D'backs only have themselves & Towers to blame. Ross, is the one player that will have to be released, teams are not going to take on his contract and will most likely sign him after he is released. So Cahill & Ross will be on the books for another couple of years at nearly $20M.....good grief!

From the way every one has talked, I thought La Russa had the last say so. He doesn't?

Don't forget Arroyo's contract. A 37-year old pitcher who is on the disabled list with a bad elbow.

According to Buster Olney, the Diamondbacks are sending 2.05 million to the Yankees in the McCarthy deal.

Good point, I was saying the same thing. He was is 2-0 with a 2.13 ERA and 13 strikeouts in 12 2/3 innings over his last two starts.

My understanding is all trades go through TLR so he would have final say on this.

That's assuming Upton is a quality player. I don't think he is, but quality can mean different things to different people.

Sabbathia was just out on the DL for the rest of the season... Which you would think would've created some additional leveraging for the Dbacks. But, given who they got in return coupled with having to chip in $2 million...well, it's puzzling...

Shoot, forgot about him. Rumor was NY was interested in him before he went on the DL.

He was owed $4.1, so they split his salary.

Tony LaRussa is a brilliant baseball mind in game situations. He gets the best out of his players and is one of the all time great managers in the game. With all that said, he has never been a GM or with the scouting department. Brian Cashman is one of the best GM's in baseball (a lot had to do with Steinbrenner's money and backing) but this was to be expected as ARZ is over a barrel trying to shed salary and only time will give LaRussa the experience needed to run baseball operations.

Baseball prospects has the D'backs payroll for next few years.

Cahill is set to be the biggest earner at $12.2 million. Who knew A-ball paid so well?

Miggy and Hill come in at $12 million, followed by Prado at $11 million, then Arroyo and Ross at $9.5 million.

Upton would be the 2nd best hitter on this team by a long shot and would solidify one of the outfield spots in addition to not needing to trade pitching prospects in an effort to make up for a disastrous deal (Skaggs/Eaton for Trumbo)

The D'backs front office made a mistake making Upton the face of the franchise (UPTOwN) before he was ready . . . if he ever would be ready to handle it.

He didn't and you can't un-do it. The only way to rectify it was to move him.

There is more to baseball than at-bats. Even there, between Young's mile-high popups and Upton disregarding the cutoff man and showboating it in RF didn't help their causes.

Don't sell me that bull. Upton was the most recognizable D-Back on the team throughout the majority of his career in AZ; and even during the aforementioned campaign made 2 all-star games and was in the Top 5 for MVP voting. The problem was the assclown who thought dangling him on the trade block for two years was a swell idea. Keeping him and continuing to help him improve would've been the right move. Selling him for pennies on the dollar was not.

The fact you continue to justify the trade and the compensation shows you have more than just a dislike for Upton, but some sort of disconcerting visceral hate. When Prado isn't even outhitting the throw-in piece in the deal (Chris Johnson), it's silly to think the D-Backs were even close to getting equal or near equal value.
