The need for a running back was clear for the New England Patriots heading into the 2025 NFL draft, but it was surprising to see them take Ohio State's TreVeyon Henderson with the No. 38 pick.
That's until you turn on the tape.
Henderson is a home run threat every time he touches the ball. He has the kind of elite, breakaway speed the Patriots haven't had in the offensive backfield in quite some time. That makes him a dangerous complement for running back Rhamondre Stevenson.
His addition to the room with the likes of Stevenson and Antonio Gibson instantly gives the Patriots one of the best running back units in the league. More importantly, it gives them another reliable pass protection option for second-year quarterback Drake Maye.
NFL draft analyst Daniel Jeremiah claimed Henderson was "one of the best pass-protecting running backs" he's ever evaluated.
"My favorite thing that I've seen in this draft is the pass protection tape for TreVeyon Henderson. There's nothing like it," Jeremiah said on The Joel Klatt Show. "When you just slow it down, it looks like the Matrix. When he hits guys, you just see the slow motion of the arms flailing, the feet up in the air.
"He is an animal in pass protection, and there's so few guys in college who are good at it. Shoot, there's not that many guys in the NFL who are good at it. He's one of the best pass-protecting running backs I've ever evaluated."
Henderson compiled 3,761 yards and 42 touchdowns, along with 77 catches for 853 yards and six touchdowns during his college run at Ohio State. He's a true do-everything back with the ability to emerge as a future star on offense for New England.
Grade: B
