Grimm (NBC)

Cast: David Giuntoli, Silas Weir Mitchell, Russel Hornsby, Sasha Roiz, Bitsie Tulloch and Reggie Lee

Plot: Remember the fairy tales your parents used to tell you before bedtime? Well, those weren't stories, they were warnings.

Detective Nick Burkhardt thought he was ready for the grim reality of working homicide in Portland, Oregon. That is, until he started to see things... things he couldn't quite explain. Like a gorgeous woman suddenly transforming into a hideous hag, or an average Joe turning into a vicious troll. Then, after a panicked visit from his only living relative, Nick discovers the truth about his visions: he's not like everyone else, he's a descendant of an elite group of hunters known as "Grimms" who are charged with stopping the proliferation of supernatural creatures in the world. And so begins his new life journey - albeit a reluctant one at first - as he solves crimes with his partner who knows something about Nick has radically changed but can't quite put his finger on it. Along the way, Nick finds himself unexpectedly getting help on some of the more difficult cases from Monroe, a guy who seems normal at first but is soon revealed to be what you might call a "big bad wolf." Literally!

While the Brothers Grimm wrote fairy tales that children have adored for generations, imagine if the villains were real, and Nick was the only one who could stop them.

From executive producers David Greenwalt (Angel, Buffy the Vampire Slayer) and Jim Kouf (Angel, National Treasure) comes a new world of police work where all cases have a storybook connection... but not always happily ever after.

At first glance it looked like a blatant Supernatural ripoff, but the only problem I ever had with that show was the acting. This doesn't look like it has those problems.

It makes more sense to have a TV series fantasy draft as to which series lasts the longest. This looks to be a horrible year for new hour long scripted TV shows regardless of genre. There isn't a single one that I'm excited about and only a half dozen or so that I'll even set up for DVRing. The last several years I think I've recorded probably 30 or more new shows each season. Most were disappointments but at least they warranted a quick look. If it wasn't for the summer shows my TV would make a swell anchor.

Because it looks bad? Because it's NBC? Because it's on Friday night?

Would love to hear some details. I'm curious because I'm feeling somewhat ashamed of being interested in watching this.

FWIW, things seem to have changed at NBC/UNI creative for the better since Comcast took over. At least that's the impression from my little corner of the NBC universe. I just don't know if they've improved enough yet.

Well, since I (and a good chunk of the viewing public) very much enjoyed the acting in that show, it probably appears to be a bad copy of Supernatural. I mean, Jim Beaver as a supporting actor? Acting gold right there.

Yeah, I didn't get the bad acting comment either. I don't consider myself the best judge of acting talent but I usually recognize a poor performance when I see it. I enjoyed Supernatural and thought the acting was consistently effective.

Apologies for stepping on toes, gentlemen, I just find the guy who plays Dean to be a horrendous overactor. Like high school play bad.

YMMV.

I also have been sort of interested, Matt -- I grew up on the Brothers Grimm. I like the idea of fairy-tales having a foot in reality, but the cop aspect sounds sort of stick a fork in it.

Looks like Grimm's a winner, at least as far as NBC is concerned. The series premiered to 6.5 million viewers. This makes Grimm NBC's highest-rated drama series premiere this season. It's the highest rated, non-sports, Friday night program in the coveted 18-49 demo since last New Year's Eve.

It was pretty bad to me. The only thing that might save it--might--is the two supporting characters. The sidekick and the captain were decent. The main actor sucked balls, the effects were lousy, and the pacing stunk. Plus, it is on at the same time as two other shows, so I would have to watch it online the day after or so. I might give it another peek, but that's it.

I'm surprised by the negative comments here. I like the show. Not surprisingly since David Greenwalt is involved but it felt a lot like Angel. I'm not thrilled with the lead (or his girlfriend) but I have no complaints with the effects or the pacing.
