If the Clippers match on Richardson and Dampier won't play for the Suns (or the Suns don't offer him their money), it seems that one possibility would be a three-way trade with the Knicks. The Suns would get Kurt Thomas, the Knicks would get Dampier, and the Warriors would get, um, something that they want, whatever that is.

The Suns' cap space would probably provide enough flexibility to make everyone happy, including Dampier, who could negotiate a bigger contract depending on who else the Knicks give up. But I haven't been able to iron out the particulars in a way that would make sense for everyone.

Can someone succeed where I have, so far, failed?

Golden State trades:

Erick Dampier ($9m)

NY Knicks trade:

Kurt Thomas ($5.9m)
Mike Sweetney ($2.0m)
Cezary Trybanski ($1.8m)

Suns trade: ???

Golden State winds up with Sweetney, Trybanski and a $5m trade exception. They might get Frank Williams ($957k) instead of Sweetney or Trybanski.

What Golden State really needs is a swingman or SF, but the Knicks don't have any of those to offer. Sweetney and F. Williams (on rookie contracts) qualify as assets; I imagine the Knicks need to include at least one of them to make the Warriors interested.

I'm missing something in this whole deal. I assume in your scenerio:

1. The reason Dampier doesn't want to play for the Suns is the money.

2. The knicks are willing to pay Dampier $70 million if they can get rid of the contracts.

3. The Knicks have not been able to do a deal with the Warriors is because the Warriors don't want what the Knicks have to offer.

4. The reason the Knicks would include the Suns in the deal is cover the amount of contracts that the Warriors won't take.

So, what are the Suns going to get that Warriors didn't want? What are the Suns going to trade in this deal that is more valuable to the Warriors than what the Knicks are offering or just sitting on the potential cap space?

The only way this makes any sense is if the Suns get Kurt Thomas, but he is the center point of the Crawford deal. Everything else in that deal is just exchanging bad contracts for other bad contracts. Issah Thomas has gone to great lengths to keep Kurt Thomas out of the Dampier deal, which suggests that Crawford is his higher priority.

Not necessarily. He could have any number of reasons.

2. The knicks are willing to pay Dampier $70 million if they can get rid of the contracts.

Or something like that, yes.

3. The Knicks have not been able to do a deal with the Warriors is because the Warriors don't want what the Knicks have to offer.

Right.

4. The reason the Knicks would include the Suns in the deal is cover the amount of contracts that the Warriors won't take.

Right.

So, what are the Suns going to get that Warriors didn't want?

Kurt Thomas. It appears that the Warriors would prefer the reduced team salary.

What are the Suns going to trade in this deal that is more valuable to the Warriors than what the Knicks are offering or just sitting on the potential cap space?

I don't know. If I knew, I would have already come up with something.

Kurt Thomas ... is the center point of the Crawford deal.

Maybe. My guess is that that deal would have happened by now if it was destined to work. I think it's dead.

Issah Thomas has gone to great lengths to keep Kurt Thomas out of the Dampier deal

I hadn't heard that. My interpretation is that the Warriors don't want him. Considering the deal that they just inked Foyle to, it's not too hard to see why.

No disrespect to the memory of Cotton Fitzsimmons was intended by this post.

The latest rumor is that there is a deal with the Mavs and Walker including Kurt. I suspect that he will part of every trade rumor since he is the only guy with a reasonable contract worth having.
