CLEVELAND — The Guardians will look to remain undefeated at Progressive Field this season when they begin a three-game series Friday against the AL Central rival Kansas City Royals.
After starting this season 3-6 on the road, the Guardianscame home this week and earned a three-game sweep of another divisional foe, the Chicago White Sox. The Guardians opened the season with a 2-1 series win at the Royals, so Cleveland is 5-1 thus far against AL Central opponents.
First pitch for Guardians (6-6) versus Royals (7-6) is scheduled for 6:10 p.m. Friday. Check back here for updates throughout the game as the Guardians seek their fourth consecutive victory.
Guardians home opener: Cleveland Guardians winning, Cavs clinching No. 1 seed give father-son duo special day
Here is some pregame information:
Right-hander Tanner Bibee (1-1, 6.52 ERA) is set to take the mound for the Guardians opposite Royals left-handed pitcher Kris Bubic (2-0, 0.00).
Bibee won his first start this season March 30 against the Royals, pitching 5⅔ innings, giving up two hits and two walks and striking out two without allowing a run. Bibee lost his second start April 5, yielding seven runs in four innings against the Los Angeles Angels. He struck out six through those two outings.
Through Bubic's first 12⅔ innings this season in wins over the Milwaukee Brewers and Baltimore Orioles, he did not surrender an earned run. He also struck out 16.
Guardians center fielder Lane Thomas remained out of the lineup Friday. Thomas was hit by a pitch on his right wrist in Tuesday's home opener, and X-rays taken were negative.
"Lane's improving, just not quick enough to be able to start," Guardians manager Stephen Vogt said. "So still day to day. Getting rechecked by our docs today, too, but it is improving."
How long can the Guardians wait before they would need to make a move with Thomas?
"I don't know," Vogt said. "We're literally day to day with all of this right now. We just don't know. We're talking through everything, but Lane's working, training staff's working hard to get him feeling better."
