THIS ONE IS FOR YOU KOC. TIM WE DID IT.
Chasing down his dream

Ex-K-State player eager for chance

Mar. 30, 2004 12:00 AM

We were intrigued to read about the big fellow who showed up at Cardinals minicamp Sunday with a pair of cleats and a dream.

So we tracked him down to see what gives.

"I just moved out here about two weeks ago from Michigan," said Jerome Evans, a former Kansas State defensive lineman who went undrafted in 1998. "I got up, packed up my family and came here. I've never been in an NFL camp and always wanted to try. I was just determined to do it, and the good Lord led me that way."

The Cardinals led him out of the facility.

However, when Rattlers Vice President Gene Nudo heard about Evans he wanted to know more. Turned out Nudo's player personnel boss, Pete Kettela, was already on it and had been in contact with Evans' agent, Mark Feinsod. Evans will try out for the Rattlers on Wednesday and Thursday.

"He runs a 4.85 40, so he's an athlete," Kettela said.

Evans, 27, said he thought he would be drafted after his college career, which included a six-tackle performance in the Fiesta Bowl on Dec. 31, 1997, and doesn't believe the agent he had at the time did his job.

Since then, the 6-foot-6 Evans has played semipro ball - which probably explains his interest in the Cardinals - spent part of a season with the New York Dragons in the Arena League and worked for a food-distribution business in Michigan, loading pallets.

The food job was hard work that dropped his weight from the 330 pounds to 295.

"Everybody is always asking me, 'How come you ain't in the NFL?' All I can tell them is, I've never had a chance," he said. "I've got a wife and three kids and another one on the way. I want to provide for them, so I'm very hungry.

"I can't even watch football games, because I see guys I used to play against and I know I'm better than some of them. I hope to God this is my chance."

Nudo has learned that, in the Arena League, it's best not to turn a cold shoulder to guys like Evans.

"I remember (receiver) Chris Horn showed up here with some videotapes and just left them with the security guard one year," Nudo said. "We looked at the tape, brought him in and he ended up playing for us a couple of years. Now he's with the Kansas City Chiefs, so you never know.

"(Evans) is a pretty good-looking specimen. Who knows? If he can come in and do a good job, maybe Dennis (Green) won't have to look too far to see him."

Ouch, is that offensive or is it just me?

Yes, but that was in lieu of college, not after.

Regardless, the semi-pro dig was a cheap shot. You'd expect that sort of thing from the St. Louis papers, but not Arizona's.

Go Cards!!! :cards:
Actually I have grown to accept that sort of thing from any and all media. Except ASFN of course.

It is not just you. The worst part is, this is from our local paper. :hulk:

Exactly! This is the kettle calling the pot black, i.e. - when a reporter makes an unprofessional dig by calling the Cardinals un(semi)professional.

And just to clarify to those of you whose mind works in the same fashion as Omarosa (The Apprentice) there is no racist implication in the above comment! :D

He still seems pretty stupid to me. Why didn't he send tapes of himself to the teams or go a different more productive route. If a guy just showed up, uninvited I wouldn't give the guy a chance. What if everybody who didn't make it in the NFL did that? It would be a zoo!

I listened to most of the Jerome interview on KDUS...

-how he got onto the practice field: he said he dressed the part..had his cleats in his hand - and told the guard at the gate "I forgot my code"...Jurecki says there was not a code...but somehow whoever was running the gate buzzed him thru..
- He shook hands and introduced himself to I think Bell and Berry - and they assumed he was a potential teammate.. after he got his cleats on - anthony edwards came over and talked him off the field..
-Jerome says: everyone tells me they want tape..his answer: I do not have no tape...I have tape from 8 years ago at K-STate - but the tape is not that great (not sure what he meant).
-He was on the practice squad for an arena team in new jersey..he somehow got a tryout - the coach was impressed with his pass rush skills.. Jerome said he is very good at this..rushing the passer.. They kept him on the practice squad for two weeks... 2 problems and he had to quit: 1. main issue: he could not support his family (wife and 3 kids) on what he was making on the practice squad of an arena team..they lived in another state and they were paying him $400 per week (the arena team) -and it was not enough for him to live on (live in new jersey) and support his family...so he could only stay on the practice squad for two weeks....and he had to go back to his family and go back to his real job..he would have stayed if he would have been on the roster (enough money to live on).
-2nd problem - why he was not promoted to active roster immediately..he had not played on offense since high school - and does not really have a position to play on offense..and in arena league they want you to go offense and defense - and he had never been coached on offense.
-Jurecki said: you pass the airport test...meaning...the guy is really well built - 6 foot 6 and pretty much all muscle...the guy said he has been working his ass off for years...
-he has a workout with the Rattlers tomorrow at 8:30 Am..he has a day job and called into KDUS on his "break"....

I missed the very 1st part of the interview.. Jerry Brown of the east valley tribune was co-host (lewis is on vacation)..and he and jurecki were encouraging the guy to follow his dream...

The cardinals have not called him...per Jerome anthony told him to send in some tape ..he is trying to get them some from K-State..but he said there is not any good tape of him playing.. He said he will get to the qb if someone will just give him a chance...

-someone..I think some intern at KDUS asked him his name after he left the field..and went and told everyone who he was (the rest of the media)..or no one would have known that jerome was the guy who tried to walk on...Supposedly the rattlers did call him later..
Will type more later if I remember more stuff..

I don't think he is stupid at all, and I would be wary to call him such since he runs a 4.85 and wieghs 295lbs.

How can he be stupid. He tried out at Semi-Pro levels. He was a young guy out of college. It is not like there is a book you can buy named "How to get in the NFL". He trusted his agent (bad idea) and he did not do squat for him. Early 20's comming out of college is very confusing.

By the way he is so stupid that it got him a gig with the Rattlers. I think he did it just to draw a little attention his way and it in fact might land him a job.

But I do agree that this action should not be allowed to happen, or every Johnny Dreamer would show up to every NFL camp.

I hope the guy luck, and would love to see him playing for the Cardinals one day.

Peace

BTW - I always thought of trying out for Arena league. If could get my 40 time down to around 4.9 I think I could easily play FB somewhere. I am about 6 ft, and could be 250lbs ripped. But the speed has always been the problem, plus I don't know where I would find the time to train. But the thought has entered my mind.

Just think there might have been more constructive ways of doing it but maybe not? I'm a sales manager and when I'm trying to sell something I try to plan out things as much as I can. Why is there no good tape on him? That doesn't make too much sense to me. I would be sending it to all the teams. If he could afford to make a long road trip I would stop by all of the facilities too and try to talk to everybody I could, probably legitimately though not trying to get around everybody. But hey, if a stunt like that gives him good press than I guess it worked.

I don't give him too much on being in his early 20's and just out of college. If we had done his research he could of found out the best way to get interviews for pro football

Thank goodness. No way we could get through training camp without a replacement for Duncan.
