For me it just reaffirms what I thought about Jake, he's not a franchise QB and at the salary he got here, and what he'll cost Denver in year 3, he's a mistake. This year and next he's cheap and a bargain for Denver, but in year 3 the option comes due and the salary jumps, unless they redo the deal then, you're paying a LOT of money for a guy who has shown he's not a guy who can win without things around him being in place.
Doesn't mean he's a bad player, just that when you have a cap if you overpay your QB it makes it harder to get those pieces in place around him. Assuming McCaffrey retires this year, Sharpe may too, they almost HAVE to give Portis a large raise, they're not going to be in a position to make huge upgrades on their OL and replace Sharpe. So at some point they're either going to have to rework Jake's deal so year 3 and on are more cap friendly, or the expectation of what Jake HAS to do for them will increase significantly.
That said, the real issue I see with Denver's offense next year is Lelie, he simply HAS to become a more consistent player, he's tall, fast, can make big plays, but he's got to hold onto the ball and he's got to be able to get open more consistently. There were moments like Cleveland where he was a difference maker but they really need him to take a big step up next year and provide a more consistent deep threat WR.
I still would love to see the Cards make a run at Al Wilson in FA but I doubt he's going to be a priority with our needs at DL and CB.
